Patrons are often spoiled for choice with everything from haunted, cavernous pubs, cool, chic gin palaces and vibrant, energetic bars to suit all tastes.

The eclectic drinks menu includes a surprisingly wide range of whiskies and real ales, with staff on hand to provide their own personal recommendation as well as a number of unique takes on traditional pub fare.

One of the newest additions to Edinburgh’s ever-expanding gin scene, The Jolly Botanist has already become a firm favourite with its innovative cocktails, vast selection of gins and knowledgeable bar staff.

While others on this list are set on cultivating a cool vibe and a young clientele, The Bow Bar has remained committed to its status of a “real pub” for several years.

A long whisky list and a healthy supply of craft beers on draft mean there’s plenty to enjoy, while the bar also benefits from a superb lunchtime deal, with patrons able to pick up a hot sandwich and a drink for just £5.

Having been around for such a long time, it’s no surprise that the pub has picked up some spooky stories and a ghost or two along the way.

Scottish Ghost Adventurers spent a night at the bar last year, prompted by the picture above, and manage to record the words “help me” and the name “Connor” being uttered by a mysterious source.

With the most famous story being that of the workmen who were once renovating the infamous pub.

Sections of the pub were once part of the infamous underground vaults of Edinburgh and this has added to the strange aura around the place, especially given the fact that many people met a grisly end in those cavernous rooms.

Another pub that has been built into the side of the South Bridge Vaults and another that seems to have its fair share of ghost stories.

With that in mind we’ve picked out some of the best pubs to pop into for a quick pint should you be feeling a little parched.

It’s good value, has a nice mix of patrons and does food, making it the perfect place to pop in and out of for a pint between shows.

Small and cosy, it’s the perfect place to nip into for a quick pint or a half and half.

Located in the heart of Edinburgh’s new town, it’s the perfect place to try and escape the crowds for a pint.

Definitely one for fans of great beer (and great music), The Auldhouse is the perfect place to stop off for a pint of expertly brewed beer and some cracking food for refeuling, including (according to the staff) Edinburgh’s Largest Nachos.

The Last Drop • Greater Grassmarket

As the name implies, the Grassmarket used to be where local farmers brought their hay and other produce for sale.

The last Drop Tavern is located immediately next to the scene of public hangings which took place there back in the 18th century.

Although rather dimly lit this small pub is big on atmosphere.

It is named aptly after its sinister location.

The low ceilings and booths give the Last Drop a warm, cosy feeling and it is a popular stop off for the weekend revellers.
