So after having a stroll around the old town, a gorgeous restaurant caught our eye.

She mentioned that as it was Mother’s Day, the back area of the restaurant was booked up with lunches and dinners, but we were more than welcome to grab a table at the front.

We decided for a glass of prosecco and two courses, as we still had a bit of walking to do, and went with the beef, a chocolate dessert and a rhubarb concoction.

It looked gorgeous on the plate too, so of course there were the obligatory photos (don’t hate us).

Still, we’re so glad we stumbled upon this gorgeous little place.

A modest entrance off the Royal Mile belies the luxury that awaits within this very popular restaurant, a favourite with both locals and visitors to the city.

The upper dining room is an elegant space in which to enjoy the dishes on offer.

The menu in this unusually named restaurant changes seasonally, although you can be assured you will always find Scottish favourites here, such as venison and salmon.

A seasonal lunch menu is available during the day offering four starters, four mains and four desserts.

There is also a four course tasting menu with wine pairing as an optional extra.

The ambience is plush, relatively dark and cosy, and there’s a serious chef in the background.

A compact, well-conceived menu leans towards dark meats, but there's nothing heavy about a succulent main course of venison, carrot, tonka bean, chicory and sprouts.

Or the rabbit loin, wrapped in bacon with black pudding in the creamiest pearl barley sauce.

After that, pudding may seem indulgent, but if tempted, try the apple compote with puff pastry, crème pattissière and vanilla ice-cream.

Having opened on the Royal Mile in 2010, Angels with Bagpipes has quickly established itself as one of the best Scottish restaurants in Edinburgh.

Angels with Bagpipes | Restaurants in Old Town, Edinburgh

Fine Scottish dining at an impressive Old Town location with a modern twist High class, well-presented Scottish cuisine (all locally-sourced, of course) at an enviable location on the Royal Mile.

Enjoy fine dining and a slightly-too-pricy wine list in the modern interior, or take in the Old Town atmosphere at one of the al fresco dining tables (with heat lamps and blankets provided during the chillier months).
