It has a busy waterfront with restaurants, bars and shops jostling for attention and offering views of the bridges and the water to tempt you in.

You can find The Boathouse on South Queensferry’s High Street but you can also get in from the beach-side.

Stairs took us downstairs, first to the busy bistro and then to the calm and intimate restaurant.

The Boathouse’s restaurant menu offers fresh local seafood with seasonal and contemporary accompaniments.

As C. tucked in to his creamy mushroom and asparagus gnocchi, I enjoyed my sea bream with salsa.

After a long career in the restaurant industry, co-owners Richard and Margaret Hewat (who has worked for over 20 years in 5 star hotels), decided it was time to open their own eponymous restaurant in September 2004.

With its fresh dark red and white frontage and bold black and white chequered flooring, Hewat's has a real French bistro ambience about it.

Head Chef Richard Hewat gained great experience over four years as head chef at Fishers seafood bistro in Leith, Edinburgh, winning the Egon Ronay Best Seafood restaurant award.

Richard's philosophy is to keep the dishes simple using the finest ingredients from Scotland's superb larder of fresh fish, meat, game, fruit and vegetables.

A choice of six main courses follow such as Medallions of Aberdeen Angus beef with brandy and peppercorn sauce or roast escalopes of corn fed chicken with morel mushroom sauce and dauphinoise potatoes, baby corn and asparagus.

It’s easy to see why Richard and Margaret Hewat’s restaurant has thrived for over a decade despite the competitive nature of Edinburgh’s dining scene.

With its dark red walls, twinkling chandeliers and linen tablecloths, it’s posh enough for a romantic or special night out, yet still relaxed enough to present a mid-week alternative to cooking.

The menu, with a half-dozen options each course, should be broad enough to keep most folk happy.

A well-established restaurant in Edinburgh since 2005, family-run Hewat's seamlessly blends Scottish produce and elegant French cooking techniques.

In the striking dining room, glittering chandeliers and ruby-red furnishings are swirled throughout, while a plush, baroque-style private area can be cordoned off with thick drapes.

There is a proud Scottish slant to many of the dishes offered at Hewat’s Restaurant.

The menus change with the seasons but typical among the starters might be the Stornoway black pudding with haggis risotto and crispy pancetta or the Cullen skink with mussels.

Veggie choices include dishes like the wild mushroom, red onion and baby leek tartlet with brie, charred Mediterranean vegetables and rocket salad.

Pride of place goes to beef dishes like the charred Sirloin of Aberdeen Angus beef with a peppercorn sauce, spring onion and thyme potato cake and fine beans.

Hewat’s Restaurant is on Causewayside in Edinburgh’s Southside.
