Monteiths - Gluten Free Edinburgh

Set in the heart of the old town in Edinburgh, Monteith’s restaurant should be on every gluten free eater’s bucket list.

Kicking things off, we had some punchy little cocktails which is something this place is known for – some locals drop into the bar area just for a cocktail or a glass of the great wines on offer….

Mains, which come with gorgeous looking chunky chips which the gluten avoiders sadly cannot eat (a minor issue with so much other choice), were all beautifully laid out and had punchy flavours.

This is a place to put on your Edinburgh Fringe eating list.

While it was during August that she visited, you may want to bear in mind when you eat at Monteiths that they do not serve GF bread and that some choices on the menu are not GF.

Relaxed dining in an atmospheric Old Town setting, complete with an appealing bar.

Those of the taller persuasion may require a tilt of the head when entering the fairy-lit archway to this underground restaurant and bar.

Post-work suits prop up the bar while diners get down to business in the cosy dining area.

Although the dessert menu is strong, the Rum n Raisin Old Fashioned cocktail is a thing of wonder.

The deeply layered flavours provide a rich digestif which will send you home with a spring in your step – just watch your head on the way out.

From their selection of Small Plates, our favourite was probably the gummy chargrilled octopus (£9.50), with blackened (though not particularly charred tasting) and dramatically undulating kraken-like tentacles, wisps of crispy kale and a citrusy-soy ponzu sauce on the side.

The latter was supposed to come with ponzu sauce, pickled ginger and wasabi mayo.

I also loved our other single bivalve, with its hint of lip-smacking chilli-infused salty cabbage-y juice.

Apart from that, it was satisfying and rustic, with threads of burly pasta, a seam of chilli, tomato, and crispy fronds of fennel on the top.

The apple tart (£6.50), recommended by the lovely Aussie waitress, featured billowing underskirts of puff pastry, apple petals, a generous slosh of sticky caramel sauce and a blob of plush salted caramel ice-cream.

The kitchen at Monteiths uses top quality, locally sourced ingredients to create carefully prepared and beautifully presented dishes for their seasonal menus.

On both the evening a la carte and lunch menus, well balanced flavours are key to the dishes.

Popular dishes on the lunch menu include lobster omelette, chicken Caesar salad, the steak burger and, of course, the fish and chips.

The a la carte menu offers more complex dishes such as monkfish with cauliflower, bacon and black pudding or the venison loin with a pistachio crust, grilled leek and smoked beetroot.

Monteiths is on the High Street on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

Difford's Guide rating: 5/5 [Devil's Advocate info & review] Monteiths 57-61 High Street (Royal Mile), Edinburgh, EH1 1S A fairy-lit passageway off the Royal Mile leads to this semi- subterranean bar and restaurant which offers a good beer and wine menu, great cocktails and some very tasty "Grazing" snacks such as Haggis Bon Bons.

Difford's Guide rating: 4/5 [Auld Reekie info & review] The Bon Vivant 55 Thistle Street, Edinburgh, EH2 1DY Bon Vivant is a charming little place with the feel of an old-fashioned tea-shop but a modern European food menu, a good wine list and some of the very best cocktails in Edinburgh.

Difford's Guide rating: 5/5 [Bon Vivant info & review] Bramble Bar & Lounge 16A Queen Street, Edinburgh, EH2 1JE To quote owner Jason Scott, "Named for Dick Bradsell's modern classic cocktail, Bramble is by name as Bramble is by nature: uncomplicated, inventive and downright tasty."

Difford's Guide rating: 4.5/5 [Bryant & Mack info & review] Hoot The Redeemer No. 7 Hanover Street (Princes St), Edinburgh, EH2 2DL This subterranean bar is themed around a 1950s New Orleans' funfair and serves alcoholic ice-cream and frozen cocktails dispensed from slush machines.

Difford's Guide rating: 4/5 [Hoot The Redeemer info & review] Lucky Liquor Co 39A Queen Street, Edinburgh, EH2 3NH A quirky bar that is styled somewhere between soda parlour, ice-cream shop and cocktail bar, Lucky Liquor is aptly named after the fact the bar carries just 13 types of alcohol and offers 13 cocktails on a menu that changes every 13 weeks.
