A cozy little pub on a heavily-trafficked stretch of The Royal Mile, The Royal McGregor serves up solid, contemporary renditions of Scottish pub fare.

A sizable portion of fish and chips makes for a suitable sponge for one of the 50 single malt Scotches in house.

"The Royal McGregor has been delighting locals and tourists alike for over 10 years on Edinburgh's Royal Mile.

Our recently refurbished premises blend traditional features with contemporary décor to create a warm and inviting atmosphere for all ages.

Our passion is local produce, independent local breweries and Scotch whisky which gives us the opportunity to showcase the best in Scottish produce. "

A relative newcomer to Edinburgh’s Old Town dining scene, The Royal McGregor is a whisky bar and restaurant set along the Royal Mile.

The offering here is traditional Scottish cuisine supported by local indie beers and a lengthy list of whiskies served with friendly appreciation to a mostly tourists clientele.

As it was early morning with a full day of diligent doings ahead, I didn’t sample any of beers or whiskies.

But perusing the lists of what I was passing up, I reckoned next go round in Edinburgh, this restaurant would be top choice for an evening visit.

The Royal McGregor is located at 154 High Street, EH1 1QS.

They wanted to see our opinion on their whisky and the tasting flights that they offer, and we were more than happy to oblige.

So up stepped myself, Lucas, Tiger and the Bear for a night of whisky and fine traditional food.

But of course we are here to sample the whisky flights on offer!

There are a couple of different set ups you can use to do a Royal McGregor tasting: Option 1: A straight up whisky flight of four whiskies, served one by one with tasting notes, water and dark chocolate – from £11.95.

If you are ever in Edinburgh and fancy trying some different whiskies with some fine food, then pop on over to the Royal McGregor.

Fry ups in Edinburgh are in plentiful supply, but the capital's best cooked breakfasts make them with plenty of love as well as oil, as Ray Philp finds A truism: hangovers are unpleasant.

No longer the preserve of the greasy spoon, fry ups are a staple of most breakfast menus in town.

Royal Mile Backpackers, 105 High Street, EH1 1QS, 0131 225 7064 The Royal McGregor, on the city’s Royal Mile, has a breakfast menu that could satisfy the finnickiest, selfie stick-jousting tourist.

Their breakfast menu has something for everyone – croissants, fruit salad with almonds, and porridge – and their fry up option has a contemporary, but controversial twist: the traditional tattie scone makes way for chips.

The upgraded breakfast includes: sausage, bacon, egg, black pudding, haggis, tattie scone, tomato, mushrooms, beans and fried tatties – as comprehensive a fry up as you could imagine.

With its location on The Royal Mile, The Royal McGregor is the perfect place to unwind after a day spent sightseeing, but with its high quality cuisine it’s as equally as popular with Edinburgh locals too.

For a Scottish take on an international favourite, go for the Highland burger topped with haggis and whisky sauce.

With an impressive selection of over 90 malts it would be rude visit The Royal McGregor and not have a wee dram or two, or three… but if whisky isn’t your poison you can just as easily sink some hand-pulled cask ales or sip on a cocktail instead.

Whether it’s for dinner or drinks, The Royal McGregor pulls in crowds with its prime location on High Street along The Royal Mile.

Make a reservation at this Old Town favourite for an authentic Scottish experience in the beating heart of Edinburgh!
