La Garrigue

La Garrigue which opened in July 2001 is simple and stylish. A cross between an up-market restaurant and a French bistro, the ambience is friendly and relaxed.

drinks   food

Now in its 17th year, La Garrigue specialises in the food and wines of the Languedoc region of southern France.

Chef Jean Michel Gauffre serves rustic, family-style French cooking in an unusually shaped but smart dining room commanding open views of Calton Hill and furnished with chunky wooden furniture and colourful paintings of the Languedoc.

Starters of blue cheese soufflé with chicory, pear and pomegranate, and smoked partridge with lentil salad and roast apple are light yet satisfying.

Mains of slow-cooked beef cheek with cabbage parcel, pasta cake and braising jus and cassoulet of roast duck, Toulouse sausage, pork belly and lingot beans are meaty and filling.

Leave some room for dessert, as the lavender crème brûlée with meringue and gooseberry compote, and the warm frangipane plum tart with bitter almond liquor ice-cream are sweet, impressive and moreish.

food

La Garrigue is known for its French country cuisine with a focus on regional specialities from the Languedoc region of France, where chef Jean Michel hails.

And while the food reflects the fact that this is an up market French restaurant, the atmosphere is more like a bistro - relaxed and friendly.

The restaurant is light and airy and enjoys views across Carlton Hill while the original Tim Stead signature chunky wooden tables and chairs add to the overall ambiance.

The menu is seasonal and depending on the time of year may include dishes like French roast rabbit with black pudding, cabbage and juniper berry sauce.

Jean Michel sources many ingredients from the Languedoc region including the wines, which means there are some good finds at reasonable prices.

Chef-patron Jean-Michel Gauffre (who hails from down that way) has brought the region's honest rustic cooking to his smart neighbourhood restaurant in Edinburgh's old town.

Expect regional cooking delivering full-bore flavours, starting with pork, rabbit and apple terrine with celeriac remoulade, then fish of the day might be red snapper with aïoli lentils.

Gauffre was born in the heartlands of cassoulet so his take on the rich stew of belly pork, duck confit, Toulouse sausage and white beans is the real deal.
