It has an authentic bohemian atmosphere with beautiful Turkish rugs, ornate wood carving and some really beautiful lanterns.

The main courses are the classic Turkish dishes of mousaka, kofti and beyti, but where they really come into their own is the wide selection of mezze (tapas like dishes which are combined to form a delicious meal).

At the weekend patrons are also treated to authentic Turkish, Greek and Flamenco music – but be sure to book ahead as weekend tables are in great demand.

We are unable to accept card payments – cash and cheques only please Tucked away in a corner of Edinburgh’s historic Old Town, just minutes from the hustle & bustle of the Royal Mile,  our family run restaurant and tea shop is open daily, from midday to 11pm serving delicious, traditional, home cooked Turkish food and drinks.

Empires philosophy is to provide you with a relaxed & memorable dining experience that’s based on fresh, home cooked food and informal, high quality customer service.

Our menu is inspired by the Turkish tradition of meze; a selection of small dishes similar to Spanish tapas and we serve a large selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes as well as meat and seafood.

The music on offer ranges from traditional Greek, Turkish & Flamenco to more experimental Folk & acoustic.

Booking a table in advance is recommended to avoid disappointment – especially at the weekend when we’re usually full.

Ideal for sharing, the mezze starters are fantastic for groups.

The mezze range includes classic humus as well as more exotic dishes like the acili – toasted and crushed hazelnuts served with tomato, chill, garlic and spices.

Restaurant review: Contini Cannonball, Edinburgh - The Scotsman

Lunch for two, excluding drinks, £47 FOOD: 9/10 AMBIENCE: 9/10 TOTAL: 18/20 Carina Contini is one of Weekend Life’s regular food columnists, and she and her husband Victor own this restaurant, as well as Edinburgh’s Scottish Cafe Restaurant and Contini Ristorante (formerly Centotre).

They’re currently serving lunch daily (dinner is Wednesday to Saturday only) and, on our Saturday visit, there was just the set menu of two courses for £18, three for £22.

These were sprinkled with sea salt and interleaved like the apple on a tarte tartin, with additional layers of transparent pickled turnip and downy blobs of parsley-strewn ricotta.

My other half didn’t quite connect with his main of Phantassie organic pumpkin gnocchi, as he found the flavour and texture too cakey.

It was served in a sundae glass, with a “Victor Carina CONTINI EDINBURGH”-emblazoned wafer sticking out of the top of three scoops worth of biscuity, hazelnutty, chocolate-y ice-cream, which was pretty darn good, even in the bleak midwinter.

David Bann | Restaurants in Old Town, Edinburgh

Review analysis
food

Top-drawer vegetarian food that even meat eaters will love David Bann is Scotland’s leading vegetarian restaurant and has been a successful part of the Edinburgh scene since 2002.

For example, the parsnip, apple and blue cheese pudding is a light bake of the root veg, Bramley apple and Strathdon Blue cheese, served with roast spuds, swede and Puy lentil stew – ample, comforting but not debilitating.

As a single main dish with a glass of wine it makes for a fine lunch.

Alternatively, for two lighter courses, you could have a starter-sized plate of olive polenta, roast Mediterranean vegetables in pesto, and goat cheese curd – then a dessert like whisky pannacotta, meringue, and pear and caramel sauce.

It's an obvious benefit for vegetarians to be able to choose blind off the menu and know that anything served will be meat-free; but the quality of food should keep even the most ardent carnivore content, too.
