When I heard that Ciao Roma on South Bridge had been recognised by the Evening News as the Best Italian in Edinburgh it barely registered.
This place has a slightly more stylish feel and an eye-catching mural of figures of Italian popular culture.
I settled upon the polenta crostini to start followed by the cavatelli pasta with nduja to follow.
I’m confident there are better places for Italian food in the city, but it was still a pleasure to see a good amount of care and attention being taken with these hearty plates of food.

Published: 07:00 Friday 05 January 2018 PROUD staff at a Capital restaurant are celebrating this week after being crowned winners of the inaugural Evening News Italian Restaurant of the Year competition.
Ciao Roma in South Bridge saw off more than 100 competitors to be crowned champions.
Ciao Roma head waiter Danilo Argano, 32, said: “We feel amazing and are so proud because for us it’s a great pleasure to get this award from the Evening News.
Evening News deputy editor Euan Mcgrory said: “There was a huge response as soon as we announced our first Italian of the Year award and readers were very keen to tell us their favourites.
Their many regular visitors, however, were clearly impressed with the great food and first class service at Ciao Roma.
