Haggis Hunt | Holyrood 9A

Hankering a bite on the late side of lunch and way too early side of supper, I moseyed into Holyrood 9A anticipating something yummy based on the search yield of online gushing praise for its gourmet burgers.

I got my burger so fast!

And that burger was The Original Two-Hander (6oz beef patty of Scottish beef sourced from Simon Howie butchery with fried onions, house burger sauce, gem lettuce, beefsteak tomato, and dill pickle on a brioche bun with sides of coleslaw and fries, £9.50).

The Holyrood does its own The Haggis and The Veggie Haggis burgers, but those don’t have actual beef patties.

As much as I wanted the haggis, I really wanted a bona fide beef burger too.

Serving a great selection of interesting dishes at breakfast, lunch and dinner, this is currently one of our favourite places in town.

With the same staff and same menu reappearing at the new restaurant, the Mark Greenaway dining experience is sure to be a good one.

Set lunch menus can give you a taste of the food on offer, but the a la carte menu is really something special.

A perfect choice for a romantic night out or special occasion where classy service and mouthwatering dishes are guaranteed.

Our second favourite steak restaurant is Wildfire in Rose Street.

In Edinburgh’s old town you’ll find new The Holyrood 9A, a warm and cosy bar to call your own in the heart of the city.

We take our beer seriously.

The Holyrood’s all day menu includes mouth-watering ‘two-handers’ – an eclectic array of delicious gourmet burgers, with plenty more large and small dishes to choose from, including options for our vegetarian pals.

Ask us about reserving a corner of the bar or a whole room for your own event (link).

A full menu of guest keg and cask ales is displayed on the blackboard at the pub’s entrance, and it’s possible to partake of a 1/3 pint taster before purchasing a full pint of any unfamiliar brew.

Decent lagers are in abundance too, with Peroni, Pilsner Urquell, Cobra and Kozel amongst those available on draft, and as if this weren’t enough the pub also stocks nearly 30 bottled ciders and beers.also holds a very decent range of wines and spirits for those not so keen on beer. However, a fine selection of drinks is only half ofappeal, as the venue also offers a great menu of decent pub food, ensuring its shoe-box sized kitchen is always busy.

Dominating a pretty extensive menu are the pub’s ‘Gourmet’ burgers which come in a substantial range of variations – from traditional beef through to lamb, pork and chorizo, and even including four vegetarian options.

Your burger of choice lands at your table encased by a toasted sourdough bun and served with sides of fries and home-made coleslaw, all rather trendily arranged on a wooden chopping board. But if you don’t fancy a burger, the menu also offers a smaller range of other choices – such as salads, grills and sharing boards – to tickle your fancy, as well as some tasty, rib-sticking desserts.

For any early risers – or those looking to aid their recovery from the excesses of the night before – the menu also has an excellent breakfast section which is served each day until noon.Holyrood 9a certainly does seem to have got the formula spot on in terms of what makes an alluring and reasonably priced “pub that does good grub”, so-much-so that if you are planning on visiting as a group it’s worthwhile booking ahead as the place can be mobbed, especially at weekends.

A modern, traditional bar in the Old Town where good burgers and beer dominate.

One thing comes to mind when you hear Holyrood 9A: burgers.

The pub has a well-earned reputation as one of the city's best burger joints with over 16 meaty (and veggie) options on the menu, showcasing haggis, halloumi and everything in between.

If you're in a little early for burgers and beer, fear not: there's a good breakfast on offer, too.

Beer, burgers and big breakfasts: it's a winning combination, alright.

One of the capital’s original craft beer bars, this drinking den boasts a vast selection on tap and numerous bottles, supported by hearty pub fare.

A cut above the bog-standard burger and beer joint, Holyrood 9a emerged well before the capital’s current covey of craft beer bars.

Friendly bar staff help steer you as you ponder the 20-plus beer taps and the swell of bottled choices.

There’s a none-too-surprising nod to local Scottish brewers, including Brewdog, Williams, Harviestoun and Stewart, along with a solid variety of rotating guest ales from Thornbridge, The Kernel and Magic Rock.

The best of which are the venison burger, complete with gooey melted brie, red onions and tangy red berry chutney, and the Holyrood burger, with its beer mustard, sharp Hereford Hop cheese and sticky caramelised onion.
