The Skylark | Welcome to Lunchquest

It takes place in June, but we already have our sponsor page up and running, so pop over to if you’re feeling particularly keen.

With MJ in the final few weeks of her “fresh meat” training with the local roller derby squad, I was ploughing a lone furrow, so kept things fairly simple, with a quick spin around the Botanics, then a long stroll through the city.

It being Sunday, they had a roast, to go with their daily soup and quiche choices.

So overall, I thought that The Skylark had real potential, particularly as a relaxing Sunday afternoon spot, as the place has a smart and understated charm.

For now, there are other places in this neighbourhood that make a better case for meriting a visit.

which echo across the beach at the first sign of summer sun.

Standing out amongst the crowd is no easy task, and yet The Skylark has achieved just that.

Perfectly positioned in the town's High Street and just a short walk from the promenade, The Skylark is spread across what was formerly two separate shops, and its quirky layout works well with its many identities.

Is it a bar?

As well as providing a cosy setting to escape the often misleading Scottish elements, The Skylark plays a big part in the local community, regularly opening up its doors for family friendly events, writing clubs and music nights.

The Skylark's quirky little character has firmly embedded itself in the heart of Portobello.

It’s perfect for local weekend brunches with colouring pencils and toys for the kids, bowls of water for the dog, and a small selection of French wine and Scottish beers to keep the larger humans happy.

Little ones are looked after with storytelling and afternoon films, weeknights you might find an art exhibition or pub quiz, and weekends are for live music, kitchen takeovers, and the chef DJing.

The menu combines French flair with Scottish produce.

At night, the steak frîtes, spiced lamb burgers and bowls of mussels come with good tunes, sweet cocktails and relaxed service.

10 Toddler-Friendly Cafes/Restaurants in Edinburgh - Dickins

These places don’t necessary all have kids’ menus, but they have play areas, toys, high chairs and friendly staff who know the chaos under 5s can bring with them.

Plus they have a small play area with toys, and if your toddler allows, you could also have a wee browse in the shop… With plenty of toys and a lovely play zone your toddler will keep busy for a good while at Hemma (“at home” in Swedish) whilst you enjoy a drink, cake or some hot food.

The food is fresh, the coffee is great, the staff is friendly and they have a great play area with lots of toys for children.

Another Stockbridge gem where you can have bite to eat, a delicious cup of coffee or a freshly made smoothie – all while your toddler is busy exploring the play area and toys in the back room.

There is a soft play area, an indoor climbing frame, a retro video games machine, a buggy park, baby changing room and a kids menu with something for every taste.
