SOUL SUSHI, Edinburgh

After travelling in Australia and seeing some of the incredible sushi they produce we took their ethos of; fresh, lovingly crafted and inexpensive sushi and used that as the blueprint for what we do Since starting out we have won Food Awards Scotland South east Takeaway of the Year and become one of Scotland's most highly rated takeaways.

In our shop we provide a range of 'grab and go' boxes, rolls, nigiri, salads and soups.

All our food is made fresh on site throughout the day.

If you need an incentive to come and see us, every evening 30 minutes before closing we have our 50% off sale on all remaining sushi and salads from the chillers.

Soul Sushi - Gluten Free Edinburgh

Review analysis
food   menu

I am sure we have all wondered why so little sushi is gluten free.

Often, the mass produced boxes of sushi in supermarkets have wheat in them because it’s used in the production process, to make things glue together easily and, obviously, those little fish-shaped bottles of soy sauce aren’t GF either.

This great little takeaway (with a few seats for eating in) has a whole gluten free menu!

They also drop a few sachets of GF soy sauce into your bag, to keep those little rolls tasting good.

Giving up on finding good rolls and nigiri, I had been trying to make my own – but not any more – I will just nip down to Soul Sushi and pick up a selection.

Soul Sushi (126 Nicolson Street, Edinburgh) | The List

food

You'll find some of the best sushi in the city at this small sit-in or takeaway spot.

What started as a sushi delivery and collection operation based in Restalrig now has its own shop with a small sit-in area on busy Nicolson Street.

One wall is decorated with a multicoloured mural by local artist Elph and the other is lined with fridges loaded up with plastic takeaway boxes of sushi rolls, soft drinks and Japanese pancakes filled with chocolate or lemon custard.

Being in the heart of student-land, it’s a popular spot for an affordable supply of sushi with much better-quality ingredients than the packs on offer in supermarket chains.

Bargain-hunters take note, there's 50% off all remaining salad and sushi every evening for the last half-hour of opening.

Maki Maki (75 Nicolson Street, Edinburgh) | The List

Review analysis
food

Part of the Maki & Ramen family (with one relative just around the corner on West Richmond Street and another on Fountainbridge), this pocket-sized sushi bar changed its name from Maki Maki to Maki & Ramen in March 2018.

Space is tight around the bar (the maximum capacity is ten people) but if you can find a free stool you’re in for a treat.

As chefs sharpen knives, slice open fish and carve veg into neat strips behind the counter, customers can choose from deep, wide bowls of rich ramen for under a tenner, or a selection of beautifully light, fresh sushi and sashimi: options include Scottish sea bass or mackerel, Thai squid, Vietnamese octopus or Japanese hamachi.

They also offer a 12-course omakase tasting menu, with optional sake pairings, where diners follow the often intriguing and innovative recommendations of the chef.

Flavours are cleverly balanced, the presentation is excellent and the experience is memorable (depending on how much of the sake you enjoyed along with the food – there are four premium varieties to choose from).

Scran Salon at Soul Sushi | Scran Salon

It was a rainy old evening, so people had already done a good thing by even reaching our latest Scran Salon in the welcoming confines of Soul Sushi’s southside shop on Nicolson Street.

Our hosts, Soul Sushi, have been regular saloneers down the years.

Soul Sushi had both food and drink options for us to try.

It was lovely to see such a varied and engaged crowd, this evening, with a great balance between locals and visitors, regulars and first timers.

As the evening drew to a close, it was agreed that it had all been jolly good fun and that the food and drink we had heard about and tasted was top notch.
