Kim's Mini Meals (Edinburgh): A Little Korean Gem

By New York Korean restaurant standards, the menu was fairly limited though it covered all the compulsories — soups and stews, bibimbap (of course), Korean pancakes, noodles, galbi and bulgogi.

This little glass of murky liquid came with a swirling vortex of soft rice bits when the waiter set it down.

Since I had been craving something warm and spicy, my choice was obvious — soondubu jjigae (£8), a bright red stew featuring silky tofu and vegetables in a spicy peppery broth.

First though, this appeared — complimentary green bean soup and a few little bits of Korean banchan (side dishes).

It wasn’t as fiery as the versions in New York City’s Koreatown that I’m used to (and I had requested the spicy, as opposed to non-spicy, version) but the melange of flavors that make this dish great were all there — the Korean peppers, earthy mushroom nuances, a light sweetness from the vegetables.

The owners of family-run restaurant Kim’s Mini Meals are on a mission to bring fresh, home-made Korean food to Edinburgh residents.

Owned by native Chris and partner Dariusz, this subterranean restaurant expertly injects a South African twist into their mouth-watering brunch and lunch menu and the staff are lovely to boot.

All of the food at this unassuming but much-loved restaurant is cooked fresh over a charcoal fire and – as a result – tastes just as good (if not better) as the fare in Turkey itself.

The best places to eat authentic sushi in Edinburgh Their tagline is ‘Good food from Naples’ and that sums up this restaurant perfectly.

The dishes served here here are genuinely Italian (unlike the majority of chain restaurants) and the menu offers a fresh take on the usual suspects of pasta and pizza.

If you’re up for queuing, expect charming hospitality and excellent Korean home cooking in this unique family living room-cum-restaurant.

For three bustling hours, six days a week, this tiny family restaurant throngs with customers after their fix of Korean specialities like kimchi, bulgogi, kimbap and, yes, spam.

The food is handsome recompense for the wait, with a complimentary soup and outstanding pickles whetting the appetite for the treats to come.

Among these, dolsot bibimbap – a spitting-hot stone bowl layered with rice, vegetables, meat and egg, mixed at the table – is a particular highlight, as is the alarming sounding but completely delicious kimchi jigae, a fermented cabbage and spam stew.

Though tasty, this is rustic food, so don’t expect the seasoning of the pa jeon to be perfect, or the mussels in the bokkeumbap to be be juicy and tender, but do expect it to be generous, comforting and full of character.
