You can’t beat a good, no-nonsense, affordable cafe, and I stumbled across a real gem when I was up in Edinburgh recently called The Snax Cafe – one of three run by the same company.

The cafe located at West Register Street is tiny but packs in a ton of goodness, with their menu offering all day breakfasts from £3.50 right up to an enormous meat-tastic offering rising to £5.

The menu is pleasingly vast and simple; filled rolls start from £1.10, toasties from £1.70, burgers from £2 with tea at £1.20 and coffee from £1.70.

Seating is pretty limited, so you have to time your visit right, and anyone hoping to bring along their 17″ laptop and spend the next three hours browsing the web with a single coffee is perhaps advised to bugger off elsewhere.

I loved the place though, and thoroughly recommend it to anyone in the area – and I’ll have to check out their other branches next time I’m up in town.

Fry ups in Edinburgh are in plentiful supply, but the capital's best cooked breakfasts make them with plenty of love as well as oil, as Ray Philp finds A truism: hangovers are unpleasant.

No longer the preserve of the greasy spoon, fry ups are a staple of most breakfast menus in town.

Royal Mile Backpackers, 105 High Street, EH1 1QS, 0131 225 7064 The Royal McGregor, on the city’s Royal Mile, has a breakfast menu that could satisfy the finnickiest, selfie stick-jousting tourist.

Their breakfast menu has something for everyone – croissants, fruit salad with almonds, and porridge – and their fry up option has a contemporary, but controversial twist: the traditional tattie scone makes way for chips.

The upgraded breakfast includes: sausage, bacon, egg, black pudding, haggis, tattie scone, tomato, mushrooms, beans and fried tatties – as comprehensive a fry up as you could imagine.

Good quality Thai food for a reasonable price and nice, alternative atmosphere have made this place very popular, not only among students.

What you might not know, however, is that Teviot is not only a good place to go for a drink and show to your family.

Personal favorite: Pizza with Ham, Mushrooms and Mascarpone (under £5) This place serves great breakfast, sandwiches and burgers for a very reasonable price.

There’s quite a few food stands and trucks around the central campus where you can get some good food for cheap.

The Union of Genius food truck is at the north side of George Square, serving soups and vegan chilli con carne.
