LaSal is a cosy, restaurant and tapas bar run by a Spanish family on Howden Street.

Decorated with colourful flamenco posters, it is equally suited for family celebrations, group dinners and quiet meals for two.

Seafood options include a classic Andalusian dish of fried squid, spicy king prawns and a lasagna made from minced squid and prawn with a cheese béchamel and tomato sauce.

More carnivorous options include the chorizo in red wine, pork loin in mushroom sauce and morcilla – Spanish black pudding.

LaSal is on Howden Street in the Pleasance area of Edinburgh.

Café Andaluz is a Spanish tapas restaurant on George Street in Edinburgh city centre.

With an interior that looks like it has been airlifted in from Andalucia – terracotta pots, Moorish hanging lamps and intricately carved wooden furniture – you get the impression that you could be dining in a bodega rather than the heart of Edinburgh’s.

Please note that Café Andaluz has two branches in Edinburgh.

Behind an unassuming frontage on a quiet Newington street, you’ll find La Sal and Alba Flamenca, the flamenco dance school with which it shares premises.

The restaurant comes first, tucking in some small tables at the windows before you come to the main room at the back, ideal for larger parties.

In between is the dance studio, where performances are held on the popular ‘tablao flamenco’ dinner and dance nights.

Whether or not you’re lucky enough to have a flamenco soundtrack to your meal, there’s a lot to like about this cosy Spanish restaurant with its laidback vibe and hospitable feel.

It's a good example of the reliable menu from this colourful and welcoming neighbourhood restaurant.

Built on a genuine love of all things culturally and culinarily Spanish, Lasal is a small but well-formed backstreet restaurant which shares premises with the owner’s Alba Flamenca dance school alongside.

The menu is a hard-working affair, trying its best to cover as much ground as possible across different Spanish styles, which means it ends up being a good all-rounder rather than a place which can be picked out for doing any one style better than anywhere else.

In saying that, good quality isn’t shirked on, and this family-run place deservedly prides itself on its selection of imported Spanish meats, paella choices and Spanish omelettes.

The menu also includes a range of a la carte options and a tapas list which tours the palette of Spanish flavours from manchego cheese to tortillas and grilled octopus.

Offering special lunch menus and pre-theatre menus (it’s not far from the Festival Theatre), Lasal also boasts a lengthy list of red and white wines, sherries and beers, all once more specially selected for their Spanish provenance.
