Image caption Kismot's curry competition aims to raise money for charity Two people have been taken to hospital following the "world's hottest chilli" competition at an Edinburgh Indian restaurant.

Emergency services were called to the Kismot restaurant in St Leonards Street on Saturday afternoon after some competitors became "very unwell".

It is understood that members of the British Red Cross were on hand at the event, but the Scottish Ambulance Service still had to be called because two people had such a violent reaction.

A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: "Two patients were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary after becoming very unwell at Kismot restaurant.

Gordon Mackenzie, whose council ward covers the restaurant, called the event a "shambles" and said: "The owners owe a debt to the ambulance service, and I hope they'll find some way of making it up to them."

The unique dish, now being served in one of the Capital's restaurants, is so spicy it is making a bid for a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's hottest curry.

Anyone brave enough to finish the curry on their own will receive the dish for free and will be awarded a certificate of completion, as well as having their photograph placed in the restaurant's hall of fame.

Mr Ali said the family decided to take advice from a solicitor before placing the dish on the menu, and were advised to produce a disclaimer which customers must sign before tasting the curry.

Mr Ali said: "One of the restaurant owners joked that 'us Scottish lads had no idea about hot curry'.

The restaurant will serve the curry untilt the end of the year, and hopes to have the dish entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's hottest curry.
