If enchiladas, fajitas or Mexican food is your passion in life, then Sabor Criollo in Edinburgh may just be your paradise.

Let’s clear one thing up first though: the restaurant is not a typical Mexican – it serves Latin-American and authentic South American dishes.

This is perhaps why it is so special to me, as he usually describes meals he really enjoys as “okay” or “nice” but Sabor Criollo gets a “ really nice” which means a lot coming from him.

I also thoroughly enjoy their rice, black beans and salsa (although I think it’s been changed) mmm… I’ll usually be full after a starter and main course but occasionally I’ll manage to squeeze in a dessert.

Other than that, I really do recommend you try out Sabor Criollo as it is such a unique and special restaurant in Edinburgh and just a 10 minute walk from Princes St. P.S. you get free mints with your bill.

In an attempt to bring Latin America’s energy to this wee Auld Reekie basement there are colourful sea views painted on the walls, origami birds hanging from a tree in the corner and salsa music pumping out of the stereo.

Venezuela’s national dish, pabellón criollo, is a comforting plate of tender shredded beef, sweet slices of fried plantain, rice and black beans.

With reasonably priced Latin American grub, intensely moreish cocktails and speedy service, Sabor Criollo is a firm neighbourhood favourite.

Predominantly takeaway/delivery, this Thai descendant of Ruan Siam focuses on rustic flavours and traditional favourites.

This tiny hole-in-the-wall in Stockbridge predominantly focuses on takeaway/delivery.

You’ll find most of the Thai standard curries and stir fries served with chicken, beef, pork or king prawn and while the sauces on occasion are a bit thin, the flavour is good.

There’s also some chargrilling to investigate, as chicken, beef or duck are served up with tangy sauces and there are a few street food-type options, especially in the starters.

Gai haw bai teauy delivers pandan leaf-wrapped parcels of honeyed chicken and just a hint of whisky, while gra beoung talay fills triangular wheat parcels with moist crab and king prawn.
