They have a choice of five starters, five mains and four desserts all featuring seemingly random ingredient combinations from chef’s travels around the world.

Pan Fried Scallops with Satay Sauce, Black Pudding Pomegranate My starter had two generous fingers of tangy goats cheese whipped into a creamy frenzy and scattered with chopped up bits of walnut.

Goats Cheese Pannacotta with Apple, Walnuts and Truffled Honey Main Course For the main course, Donnie went for a generous sized portion of grilled venison haunch that was beautifully pink in the middle.

Maple and Five Spice Gressingham Duck Breast with Grilled Pak Choi, Edamame Beans and Shitake Samosa Room for Dessert?

Lycheesecake with Stem Ginger Ice Cream Taisteal means journey in Gaelic and chef Gordon Craig invites you on his travels while still remembering his Scottish roots.

Review analysis
staff   food

Michelin-trained chef Gordon Craig uses inspiration from his travels abroad to create imaginative dishes fusing global ingredients with local produce.

The 2018 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £7.95 (+ ).

‘Taisteal’ means to journey or travel and the walls of this Stockbridge restaurant are full of lush photographs of exotic spices and colourful ingredients.

The food reflects this restless energy, with head chef Gordon Craig taking the classic Scots larder for a whirl around the globe.

A similarly far-flung (if pricey) wine list (with all wines available by the glass) complements the food while the front of house service is sparky and knowledgeable.

The food is extremely tasty at Taisteal, says Gaby Soutar It’s nearly Valentine’s Day, so I decided to take my ex work wife out for lunch.

With starter options such as sweet and sour sweetbreads (£7) and Thai red curry fish soup (£6), my choice of goat’s cheese panna cotta (£6) probably isn’t the most representative of what they’re trying to do, but they had me at “apple, walnuts and truffled honey”.

It made me want to do some Gospel style singing along the lines of Oh Happy Day.

Claire’s option was equally good – a pretty speckled bowlful of half battered and half naked tangled tentacles of Singapore squid (£6), all sprinkled with five spice and served on top of a warm and umami tasting squid ink risotto.

It was flanked by four neat little UFO style discs of herby mashed crab sandwiched by wafer thin discs of pickled and baked kohlrabi, and smudges of a bright green herby chlorophyll-ish emulsion.
