With the proliferation of wine bars and upscale gastro pubs, the Tap is a haven of substance over style.

Busy, unpretentious boozer with good food and great selection of cask ales and whiskies.

Some bemoan the death of the traditional boozer, but there are valiant efforts being made in this easygoing, friendly pub to keep the emphasis on hanging out and propping up the bar while drinking an ever-changing selection of great cask ales.

The food menu has been ‘gastropubbed’ for sure (fish and chips here is a deliciously crisp catch of the day mixed with triple-cooked chips, seaweed mustard and radish, fennel and rocket salad), but the results are impressive and relatively unfussy – expect large portions and good cooking.

Sunday roasts are recommended, although fresh ingredients run out fast on busy days, so get along early.

Walk off that breakfast with a stroll to the Scottish Parliament building, making a detour down tiny Crichton’s Close for a visit to the Scottish Poetry Library.

In the shop, you’ll find illustrated linotype postcards with lines of Robert Burns poetry (£1), and anthologies of Scottish verse.

Once a veterinary college, the arts and performance space known as Summerhall is packed with warrens and small hallways that make it a fabulous place to wander for a few hours, especially if there’s a performance happening.

Aizle is one of the growing number of Edinburgh restaurants where the menu takes the form of a list of ingredients (black vinegar, chicken skin, summer berries, for instance).

Scotland’s production of small-batch and you’ve-never-heard-of-them whiskies is booming, and facing a menu of two or three hundred choices in a local pub can be overwhelming.

A smart bar with a relaxed feel, offering a good selection of ales, craft beers and wine.

Great roasts make this popular for Sunday lazing Hector’s has been helping well-heeled shoppers put their feet up, and dishing out hair-of-the-dog to locals for almost twenty-five years now.

The curved window seats in the front part of the bar are excellent suntraps, or there are long benches and velvety footstools through the back for sheltering when the rain is on.

Although it’s open every day, for many people, it’s filed in the part of their brain under ‘places to flop about on a Sunday’ - they mix a good Bloody Mary, they have a tall stack of board games, and they do a good roast too.

(A 21-day aged beef, Shropshire chicken or Norfolk pork with crackling, or cashew, walnut and cheddar nut roast for vegetarians.)
