Edinburgh's Bells Diner in the heart of Stockbridge. Burgers and ...

That's because there's usually nobody present before 5pm (except Saturday when we are here from 11am).

If you ring after this time then your call will be answered.

Also, if you tend to ring at busy times (Saturday evening between 7-9 for instance) you might have to wait longer than usual for an answer.

The price is the same though.

We have a selection of lager, good wine, and soon spirits at reasonable prices.

As for the food that Bell’s serves, you have a choice of a few starters, burgers in 3 sizes (and a chicken and veggie version, and your choice of with or without bun), and steaks all served with sides of chips and salads.

I was surprised that they took it upon themselves in the kitchen to give me a HUGE salad on my plate to make up for the lacking chips (which I normally would have gotten and given away to the other diners, but they all had chips already, and a few extra sides of onion rings were floating about our table as well).

All in all, Bell’s Diner is a charming place that I look forward to returning to and giving their steaks a go.

Blythe’s Verdict It had been many a year since my last visit to Bell’s Diner, so when Tracey and Susie suggested it as the venue for a little celebratory dinner (this week holds birthday celebrations for both MJ and me), I was delighted and excited.

For the uninitiated, Bell’s Diner is a tiny wee place in Stockbridge with a tall reputation for fine burgers and steaks.

As we operate with one poor waitress for everybody it can take time to get round everyone on particularly busy nights.

Please be patient, we endeavour to please in this small restaurant but one person can only do so much at one time…it’s another of our little idiosyncrasies THE WAITRESS MENTIONED A ‘SHARING TABLE’.

If you would rather not though you’ll just have to book a smaller table at another time when we can accommodate you.

This was created back in the time when bread was considered more fattening than the chips that come with it and… as is the naming of the Wednesday, it’s yet another of our little idiosyncrasies.

Here, within the vibrant blood-red walls of what feels like someone's living room, you can tuck into a juicy home-cooked burger topped with a thick slab of Bell's original butter.

Yes, butter.

Garlic, pepper, mustard, Roquefort and chilli butter stand out from your standard toppings, elevating that Scottish beef burger to the next level.

The spicy bean burger and homemade nut burger appeal to vegetarians, health-conscious diners can swap a heap of fries for a side salad and the blackboard boasts an array of specials, from a Moroccan-spiced lamb burger to a glutinous peanut butter milkshake.

Restaurant review: Bell's Diner, Edinburgh - The Scotsman

Opened more than 40 years ago, it specialises in steaks and burgers and has an excellent reputation so be sure to book – popping in on a whim on a quiet Monday, there was, luckily, only one table available.

Skipping to the burger options, we scanned down the list which include various butter-based toppings – mustard and garlic – as well as the classics including cheese, bacon and gorgonzola.

The burgers came with oven chips, a deliciously light bun and an iceberg cup with onion, gherkins, cucumber and tomato and a tray of sauces including ketchup, mustard and the more unusual sweetcorn relish.

The chips were good and the salad was fresh and a welcome addition but it is the burgers that clearly carry the reputation.

Bell’s Diner hasn’t been broke for 42 years, so they’ve never tried to fix it.

A visit in 2014 is probably very like a visit you had last year, or even ten, or twenty years ago: the same delicious burgers, the same massive tray of condiments and relishes passed (sometimes grudgingly) to the next table, the same towering ice cream sundaes, the thick milkshakes, even the wonky opening hours.

It’s all blissfully, beautifully consistent, and totally oblivious to the trend for burger and cocktail spots sweeping up from London, through Glasgow and now Edinburgh.

This isn’t a place that proves your finger’s on the pulse; it’s a place for first dates and families who find comfort in the old fashioned spots - even if they are still serving ropey iceberg lettuce and cress salads alongside (cover your eyes, hipsters) non-brioche buns.

Unfashionably always staying in fashion, it’s an Edinburgh institution for good reason.
