Edinburgh - REVIEW – Dinner At The Pataka (Indian/Bengali ...

I have eaten here more than a few times and have yet to find another Indian / Bengali which has such delicious dishes in such nice surroundings.

The candle-lit hot plates are a nice touch, especially for the main dishes so that the food keeps hot whilst you are enjoying your meal.

We weren’t in a particularly spicy food mood, so opted for the more mild dishes on the menu (although those with a desire for hot dishes have plenty to choose from)  and shared 3 between us.

We opted for the Red Fort Special chicken (diced chicken, mild ground herbs, yoghurt sauce, garnished with almonds and fresh tomatoes) at £8.95 and a lamb passanda (lamb marinated in special ingredients and cooked in a mild creamy almond sauce) also at £8.95.

The chicken was beautifully cooked in a mild sauce with herbs and spices.

Many diners visiting a French or Italian restaurant understand key culinary words and phrases when selecting dishes on the menu.

To inform his own diners, Pataka owner Noonu Miah offers helpful language lessons, translating a few Bengali words used in the dishes, such as murgh, meaning chicken.

Unlike some Indian restaurants, the menu here is short, concise and user friendly, with clearly marked sections for complete dinner banquets (for 2 or 4), starters, mains, sides and vegetarian dishes.

First perhaps sample Murgh Tikka, chicken kebabs with a savoury sauce to get the taste buds working, or do try one or two of their classic vegetarian starters - Pataka Pakura, Tel Baigan - spicy slices of sautéed fresh aubergine or Gujerati Poore, deep fried pancakes stuffed with lentils.

North Indian specialities include a spicy Garlic Chicken, cooked with fresh green chillies, peppers and tomatoes, and Lamb Passanda - marinated in a heady concoction of garlic, ginger, yoghurt, turmeric, coriander, cumin, nutmeg and cayenne pepper then coated in a creamy almond sauce.

Friendly, neighbourhood Indian restaurant with a strong Bengali influence, offering a refined take on traditional dishes.

There are times when nothing will satisfy your cravings or curb your hunger pangs quite like the warmth and aroma of a freshly prepared curry.

And sometimes, there is nowhere better for this task than your friendly neighbourhood curry house.

Sure, Indian/Bengali food may not naturally seem to go hand in hand with the art nouveau style of design that Charles Rennie Mackintosh pioneered, but somehow Pataka combines the two in a charming way.

Tucked away on Causewayside, Pataka may just be one of the Southside's best kept secrets: the menu oozes flavour and quality, despite the relatively straightforward dishes, and its cosy interior welcomes you with open arms.

With a varied menu, including a highly recommended railway lamb curry, and distinctly artistic decor, Navadhanya brings a touch of class to Edinburgh’s Indian offering.

A delectable combination of authentic indian dishes and locally sourced ingredients creates an irresistible menu with plenty to suit all palates.

The menu takes inspiration from Punjabi, Gujrati and South Indian cooking with the signature dish Dam Aloo Kashmeri – Potato barrels filled with mixed vegetables, paneer and nuts – and Shahi Sabzi among the highlights.

There are few bad options to choose from the hugely varied menu, but our pick of the bunch was the fantastic South Indian style Kodambakkam Curry.

Serving up a fine range of Indian and Punjabi cuisine, the restaurant was named the best in Edinburgh two years running in 2014 and 2015 by the Scottish Curry Awards.
