El Quijote

El Quijote Tapas - Spanish Restaurant in Edinburgh

We have a great passion for food and we do everything from scratch in our kitchen rather than bringing in ready meals (our hand cut chips are a “must try”).

Our specialty is the Iberian pork meals.

The Iberian pork meat is famous for its flavour and tenderness.

You can find more about the history of the Iberian pork in the following section of our website We also believe in supporting the local community and that is why we also source our restaurant with ingredients obtained in the local shops (venison from a local butcher, fruits and vegetables from a local shop, etc) We would be delighted to receive your visit and to share with you our food and drinks.

For more information about our menu and other interesting news please check the different sections of our website.

Forget the flaccid offerings of the big name burger chains, the food on offer here is crafted from fresh local ingredients, and served in very generous portions.

This is not a fast food joint, but rather a love note to the joyous conjunction of bread and meat.

They have been lavished with awards by a grateful clientele happy to take their time over some seriously good food.

El Quijote (13a Brougham Street, Edinburgh) | The List

food

Established by friends who moved to Edinburgh in 2003, El Quijote serves unpretentious, home-style cooking in a rustically decorated, tavern-like room with the aim of delivering the ‘real’ food of Spain as an alternative to the ‘normal’ tapas experience (tortilla and paella aren’t available here).

Iberian pork plays a central role, imported from Spain and found on the menu cured as chorizo and salchichon, simply griddled as presa and secreto, and in more involved dishes like flamenquin cordobes, a flattened, rolled pork loin stuffed with serrano ham and manchego cheese which is breadcrumbed then fried.

Like its namesake, El Quijote can appear a little unsettled – chaotic one minute and calm the next.

Its stated mission may seem lofty and idealistic, but eating here is a deeply down-to-earth experience.

The menu largely features Andalusian specialties rather than the tired combination of tortilla, paella and patatas bravas served up by other tapas restaurants (although some of the old favorites such as calamares are thankfully still present) and the result is both surprising and delicious.

The decor is rustic, heading towards slightly cheesy, with saffron painted walls, terracotta dishes, cartwheels suspended from the ceiling and a large picture of the eponymous Quijote (Don Quixote), but the welcome is always warm and the dishes generous and flavorsome.

When it was opened by a group of Spanish friends, El Quijote wanted to serve real Spanish food and if that meant serving less familiar dishes then so be it.

The result is a friendly restaurant serving dishes such as pork cheek stew; wild mushroom croquettes and deep-fried cuttlefish.

Many regulars swear by the range of specialist Iberian pork cuts like the juicy presa.

food

Authentic Spanish cuisine, tasty tapas, fine wine and a warm rustic atmosphere come together to create El Quijote, one of Edinburgh's most popular dining establishments and a shining star in the city’s foodie scene.

The chefs at this local hotspot utilise the very best meats and cheeses sourced directly from Spain, while making use of regional and seasonal produce whenever possible.

Owned by a group of Spanish friends, the restaurant aims to recreate the feeling of a Spanish pub and serves dishes that aren’t commonly found in Edinburgh’s Spanish restaurants.

Popular mains at this Tollcross restaurant include the caldereta de venado (venison stew), the bartolitos (king prawns rolled with bacon and cheese) and the choco frito (fried cuttlefish served with salad and lemon).

For starters, there are olives (gordal, manzanilla, black), meats (chorizo, salchichon, serrano) and cheeses (manchego, cabrales and los balanchares), as well as cooked tapas, some of which are also available as media or racion sizes. We went for the small, when it came to the rollito de berenjena con langostino y miel (£3.25, medium £8.50, main £14).

Our pair of bocadio de berenjena (£3.75) was another winner: two flattened coasters of aubergine stuffed with a creamy white cheese and a salty paprika-spiced chorizo paste, battered and deep fried, for a burly taste and texture.

When it came to my main – the special dish of El Quijote (£12.95) – I had been warned that it was a big portion (“to suit two people,” said our waitress) but I had forged onwards nonetheless.

Underneath this collage of protein, was a mixture of soft pepper strips, half moons of fried potato, pinkie-nail-sized chips of garlic, chopped onions and shreds of a sparky hot chorizo.

That is, despite the fact that his main – the bacalao frito cons salsa verde (£7.95) – was also a bit greasy.
