We’ve been eating a fair amount of Thai food, lately, but I’d had a recommendation that this place was worth a visit, so I was confident that we’d find some interesting dishes to consider on the menu.

We tottered down to try a Chinese place which was shut, and ended up going out for Thai food, for the second time in as many days.

Whenever I order a salad at a Thai place, I am reminded why I love their use of flavours.

Once again, these were very pretty dishes that did justice to the Thai melding of flavours to create a whole mouthful of taste.

Jasmine Chinese Restaurant (32–34 Grindlay Street, Edinburgh ...

food

Jasmine restaurant has the feel of a stately dining room, with glass cabinets nestled in the windows housing grand ornaments.

The mixed starter is one of these and there are a couple of standout elements of the six choices on offer – delicious salty and spicy chicken and the heavenly combination of crispy king prawns with wasabi.

With the usual frozen desserts on offer it might be best to opt instead for the toffee lychees, in a light, sticky batter sprinkled with sesame seeds.

Their upmarket surroundings and formal (yet friendly) service make Jasmine slightly pricier, although they do have a good-value lunch deal.

Pretty Thai right in the heart of Edinburgh’s theatre land.

Spirit of Thai’s pretty, understated interior has a calming effect the moment you enter.

There are dedicated sections further down the menu with choices including tom yam pakruam, a spicy hot and sour soup with a heavy hit of lemongrass.

For mains, gaeng daeng pakruam (mixed vegetable red curry) possibly trumps phad krapao tha-lay, a medley of seafood stir-fried with basil leaves and chilli.

Phoned up to check that the place was wheelchair accessible - the person said it was.

They obviously have a different ideas of what wheelchair access is.

Royal Lyceum Theatre | Theatre in Old Town, Edinburgh

Nineteenth century theatre that’s at its busiest during the Festival, but hosts both revived and original productions throughout the year One of the oldest theatre buildings in the city, the Royal Lyceum has since 1965 been home to the Royal Lyceum Theatre Company, which produces a seasonal series of original and revived theatre productions for 48 weeks of every year, making it one of Scotland’s largest and most important producing companies.

The range of work the company gets through is impressive, from restaged popular classics to work by new playwrights like Scotland’s DC Jackson and leftfield choices such as Dark Places, the debut theatrical script from Edinburgh crime author Ian Rankin.

Designed by architect CJ Phipps for local theatrical entrepreneurs JB Howard and FWP Wyndham, the Lyceum was opened in 1883 and very much retains the functionally elegant grandeur of much of the era’s typical proscenium arch theatre design.

In addition to its regular programme and a number of high-end shows during the Edinburgh International Festival, the Lyceum also has a Youth Theatre company and makes a feature of its learning programme, which includes post-show talks and community and schools projects centred around its shows.

It’s also linked by an internal corridor to Zucca, the Italian restaurant next door, a popular pre-theatre dining spot.
