In fact, when my monthly bank statement lands on the doormat (I’m one of those retro people who still receives mail), the transactions headed for the Treacle bank account far outweigh any of my other outgoings.

Such is my relationship with Treacle, and at times Hamilton’s, that when I heard the owners were taking their magic to the southside of the City, I was there, anxious to see if it stood-up to the two other members of the family.

The food menu is excellent, with a real ‘Hamilton’s’ feel to it.

Served with chips on the side, the steak was cooked medium-rare (perfect in my opinion), and with a side salad, this made for a fantastic lunch.

My side-kick devoured the 8oz Scottish beef burger with melted Scottish cheddar, tomato and chilli relish and home cut chips (£9.95).

Colourful, lively bar popular with students and workers alike for its good craic and great cocktails.

The Blackbird offers cocktails, beers and casual dining in a laid-back, contemporary setting.

The cocktail list is extensive with lots of fruit flavours and high-end spirits.

There are no pre-theatre deals but the Blackbird still attracts a crowd from the King’s Theatre as well as plenty of Tollcross and Bruntsfield regulars.

The popular beer garden is a real highlight and it's open all year round for hardier souls.

drinks

Marking the boundary between busy entertainment hub Tollcross and the slightly more sedate bistro vibe of Bruntsfield, The Blackbird attracts a hip-young-thing clientele who create a not-unpleasantly-busy atmosphere most nights of the week.

Both the food and drinks menus reflect the customer base: beers are typically either continental or craft, and the food selection includes a few admirably adventurous veggie-friendly options (not least a caramelised pear and cashew salad, which carnivores can pimp out with chicken or tiger prawns for £4 extra, or the oven-baked aubergine, zucchini and spinach cake with goat’s cheese).

Should all that go to your head, there’s always the secluded, soft-lit beer garden to retreat to, at a quiet remove from the busy Tollcross traffic.
