Afrikaans food consists mostly of red meat cooked on the braai (boerewors, kebabs, steaks, chops), potatoes and/or rice and vegetables.

Dishes include tripe, mielie meal, Amasi and Mopane worms (see these unusual food descriptions below).

It’s a delicacy in some parts of South Africa and considered a bush food in others.

Planning my holiday and writing about all this South African food made me a little home sick (SA was my home for 26 years) so I was excited when invited to go along to the new South African/Portuguese hybrid restaurant here in Edinburgh – Indaba.

The food is tapas with the Portuguese element taking the centre stage but some great South African dishes like the Dried Wors and Sosaties.

Although this combination sounds unusual, in practice it is rather refreshing.

The South African and South American dishes are deliciously different.

Some of the flavor combinations (such as South American arepas filled with Scottish haggis) are an unexpected delight and the homemade desserts are quite wonderful.

Melting pot of Spanish, South African and Scottish influences and flavours in this lively, welcoming tapas bar.

Like your tapas?

The owners are a charming husband-and-wife team: Begoña, a chef from Spain, and Charlton from South Africa, who looks after front of house.

Influences from both countries feature here, along with Scottish touches.

Nicki said: “Run by Ailsa Rollo, this is a fantastic neighbourhood restaurant in Stockbridge with a great atmosphere and a very loyal following.

Jonathan & Zarah said: “The Stockbridge Restaurant would be our restaurant of choice largely because of their commitment to using local Scottish produce and using it to produce outstanding dishes.

This restaurant, which mixes modern with period decor had a revamp in 2016 and now occupies the first floor at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, with great views over the gardens opposite.

Nicki said: “The newest of the bunch, this opened up only a few weeks ago and chef-owner Jerome Henry from Switzerland has left the big smoke of London to open his first restaurant in our fine city.

Just off Broughton St on Forth Street, the restaurant has a great location and the food is even finer.

Indaba Restaurant, Edinburgh - Restaurant Bookings & Offers - 5pm ...

If there was a prize for most international restaurant in Edinburgh then Indaba would be a front runner.

This cosy little Lochrin Terrace restaurant serves tapas and other dishes which take their culinary cue from South Africa, Spain, South America and Scotland.

Typical dishes might be the pork ribs baked in chilli, honey and tomato or the haggis a la Murciana – Macsweens haggis with spinach and pine nuts.
