The Hanging Bat (133 Lothian Road, Edinburgh) | The List

Beer, beer and barbecue (and more beer).

Lothian Road is establishing itself as a bit of a beer destination: the Hanging Bat was there first.

Some varieties, like the Hanging Bat’s Chocolate Chaos (brewed with an entire chocolate cake, apparently) are dark and thick, while others such as Sanoma’s Session Pale Ale Track are eminently quaffable.

In total, you can choose from around 150 mainly British beers (and lots of gins), so take advice from the bar staff – Pandoras of beer, each and every one of them.

Open for pretty much all meals, from breakfast and weekend brunch through to dinner, their Thursday steak night is worth a look as they source the meat locally from family-owned Shaws Fine Meats Opened in 2012 as one of the first bars not to serve pints, The Hanging Bat brews their own ales as well as stocking other UK beers and rare, imported options.

Cooked on a smokey BBQ, the dishes are made to compliment the drinks and include pulled pork, beer mac and cheese and a range of smoked hot dogs that were created especially for the bar.

Serving up the same moreish menu of Mexican street food, sharing dishes and favourites such as burritos, Topolabama is ideal for a laid-back dinner.

There’s also a dedicated vegetarian menu and an extensive list of margaritas, cocktails (including a tequila section), beers, wines and spirits.

Offering a wide variety of burgers, from the traditional to the more creative such as the Lothian Wolf (American cheese, Crispy Bacon, Pulled Pork in BBQ sauce, crispy fried onions and ‘Nduja mayo).

They also brew their own beer in a pilot brewery, and it is well worth seeking out.

The beers and ales are perfectly complimented by independently sourced breads, sausages, cheeses, pretzels and cakes that are a cut above usual bar snacks.

This is a real gem hiding amongst the less inspiring bars of Lothian Road.

The décor is as traditional as the atmosphere, providing a suitable venue to bat your eyelids on your first or second date.

Although a little on the pricey side, the food and ale were both delicious, both promptly and cheerfully served by a professional aproned member of staff.

“Definitely a place to get to know your date, though make sure you bag a table early as the ‘Bat gets busy’, especially at weekends.

Also, watch your step with the 8.5% proof ale, one of 150 beers available with classy wines and food menu: it may slur your sweet nothings if you have one too many!”

The format is simple: get your own table and order food and drink at the bar.

This rustic bar with its wooden counter and floors, its quaint picnic tables and its luxurious red leather sofas is both stylish and homely at the same time.

The beer taps take funky new shapes here, carved into wooden bats, so even the equipment is quirky and fun.

With 6 casks, 14 keg lines and 120+ bottles and cans of beer, your tastes are sure to be addressed by these attentive bar staff.

With friendly staff and a lively atmosphere to ice the cake, this venue hits the spot.

If you're a beer connoisseur or a lover of BBQ dishes, this place will definitely put a smile on your face.

The Hanging Bat | Bars and pubs in Old Town, Edinburgh

Edinburgh’s altar to the art of craft brewing is not so much a bar as a brewery with chairs, and few other options Following feedback from the venue we have made amends to the original review.

The Hanging Bat is a peculiarity on the Edinburgh bar scene, in that it seems to have jettisoned many typical bar-like elements in case they get in the way of appreciating a good (read: craft) beer.

There are no dimly lit corners for an intimate rendezvous, with bright lights, glass doors and high grey walls bringing to mind the utilitarian feel of a brewery (which isn’t a million miles from the truth – the Bat does brew its own beer on the premises).

Still, these are considerations to bear in mind only if you’re travelling in a party who don’t unanimously share your love of craft beer.

If they do (or you’re willing to limit your group to those who will), there are few other places in town that will pay tribute to the making of good beer with such focused intensity as the Hanging Bat.
