I’ve visited Topolabamba in Edinburgh and Glasgow a few times before (plus they also have a branch in Aberdeen), and they recently invited me in to the Lothian Road restaurant to try out their Express Lunch menu.

The Express Lunch menu features a selection of Topolabamba’s favourite Mexican street food dishes.

The main menu (which is available at both lunch and dinner) includes all the street food favourites from the Express Lunch menu, plus starters, sharing dishes and big plates like enchiladas, burritos and spicy chicken wings.

If you’re looking for a tasty, good value lunch, then you really can’t go wrong with Topolabamba’s Express Lunch menu.

The Express Lunch menu is available at all Topolabamba branches on weekdays, Monday to Friday from 12-4pm.

For a chain restaurant, Topolabamba serves pretty decent fast food and the menu is more interesting than your average burrito joint, finds Gaby Soutar It’s not long now until Dia de los Muertos (the Mexican Day of the Dead).

The menu here mainly features sharing options of Street Food and Classics, though there’s a section of larger plates dubbed The Big Boys (and, strangely, illustrated with a gun).

OK, though this offering rather blended in with the tostadas (£4.20), which featured puffed-up toasted tortillas topped with shredded beef, spring onion, pink chilli mayo, crumbly queso fresco cheese and more lettuce.

The trio of smoked chicken and Oaxacan onion quesadilla triangles (£5.50) were, as my dining partner said “like really good cheese toasties”, but with red onions, chook nibs and rings of chilli in the mix.

Another Big Boy option – chipotle honey ribs (£5.95) – was a little dry and gristly, but the chilli and honey flavour was there, though a scattering of pumpkin seeds on top didn’t really work, texturally.

This made five hungry girls pretty happy.

Filled with creamy cheese, a little bite of spice and a tangy tomato sauce for dipping, they were the perfect way to start off.

Next out was the queso fundido, a cheese fondue with hidden peppers and chorizo and homemade tortilla chips for dipping.

Being an absolute cheese fiend, I ate most of these myself……sorry girls.

Soon we had mini fish tacos mixed with a delicious coleslaw, homemade chorizo taquitos that perfectly mixed a great crunch and the spicy goodness of chorizo and chicken quesadillas, all quickly disappearing from plates.
