If you're hankering for some hefty portions of quality beef, then Shebeen should be your new carnivorous haven.

Sourcing their beef from local farms, the quality here is high, as is the quantity of food coming out on the plates and wooden boards.

The brave are challenged to take on the giant 'lion' steak portion of either rump, sirloin, ribeye or T-bone, served with homemade chunky chips, portobello mushroom, crispy onion rings, and optional tangy monkey gland sauce.

If steak isn't your thing, go for one of the South African specials – the bunny chow (a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with Durban curry) is spicy and generously filled, while the banana and salad on the side soothe and cool.

The restaurant fills up quickly and there's a real buzz in this laid-back room, with its simple wooden tables and the occasional colourful lizard fixed on the wall.

food

Named after township drinking dens, Shebeen is a traditionally styled South African restaurant just off Lothian Road on Morrison Street.

The wine list and selection of beers also reflect the restaurant’s South African heritage.

Such is the success of Shebeen, that it has expanded to open new branches in Dalkeith and Dalry.

Typical south African dishes such as biltong, Boerewors sausage, South African samosas and bunny chow – hollowed-out loaves filled with Durban curry – are all popular here.

Try to leave space for traditional South African desserts such as the melktert, a is on Morrison Street, just off Lothian Road and opposite the Odeon cinema.

staff   food

Very happy with this restaurant, the steaks were perfectly cooked and we had great service from the very friendly staff.

My partner and I we went to celebrate her birthday and As usual such a great experience really friendly staff and quality food...she loved her first "Shebeen experience " We frequent Shebeen quite regularly for a couple who live in the USA.

It wasnt cheap but for the amount we ate it was very good value for money Great restaurant.

Wonderful friendly staff that served great South African dishes.

If you want to enjoy a great steak or try something different then you can always try the bunny chow which is on the list for next time.
