TartanSpoon - A Review of Sygn Bar and Kitchen, Edinburgh

I’ve been to Sygn a few times mostly for cocktails and this time we chose to go for an express lunch.

We ate from the main menu and I ordered the Pulled Pork Nachos.

This was filled full with shrimp and very tasty indeed.

As it was lunchtime, there was no cocktails but coffees and soft drinks!

Sygn always have great deals on and currently have a lunchtime offer on of a Cheeseburger, fries and a soft drink for £7.

Cocktails and comfort food in the heart of the West End.

It has a studenty feel, with pop art decor and ‘Get Lashed’ cocktails on the menu, the function room at the back is often heaving with hens, and there’s a brunch club to take care of the morning after (well, afternoon actually, it runs from noon—5pm).

The food is American diner-style, with sharers like buttermilk fried chicken; waffles, wraps and dogs; and pizza and burgers – all copious, unhealthy and satisfying.

There’s a decent range of beer on tap, a few wines and, of course, plenty of cocktails, with young, friendly staff serving it all up.

From their selection of Small Plates, our favourite was probably the gummy chargrilled octopus (£9.50), with blackened (though not particularly charred tasting) and dramatically undulating kraken-like tentacles, wisps of crispy kale and a citrusy-soy ponzu sauce on the side.

The latter was supposed to come with ponzu sauce, pickled ginger and wasabi mayo.

I also loved our other single bivalve, with its hint of lip-smacking chilli-infused salty cabbage-y juice.

Apart from that, it was satisfying and rustic, with threads of burly pasta, a seam of chilli, tomato, and crispy fronds of fennel on the top.

The apple tart (£6.50), recommended by the lovely Aussie waitress, featured billowing underskirts of puff pastry, apple petals, a generous slosh of sticky caramel sauce and a blob of plush salted caramel ice-cream.

An inventive and ever developing cocktail list is just one reason to visit Sygn on Charlotte Lane.

However, as one of the West End’s hipper bar and kitchens, it is well worth seeking out.

With a kitchen that uses as many local suppliers as possible, Sygn offers a very up to date take on fashionable bar food.

Sygn is on Charlotte Lane, just off Queensferry Street in Edinburgh’s West End.

Sygn is well located for shopping in the West End and Edinburgh’s theatre district.
