In the Leith Chophouse, Edinburgh has a new challenger for the title of best steakhouse in town, finds Gaby Soutar The moon looks huge, though it’s only a waxing crescent, but there are still a lot of oddities on Constitution Street.
I seek refuge in a black-painted premises – Leith Chophouse – but try to push the wrong side of the door on entering, in a panic.
My corned beef (£7.50) was a light puffy wad of a sort-of beef parfait, laced with tiny capers and toasted cumin.
The acidic tartare was chunky with chopped gherkins and capers, and the curry sauce was an upmarket take on a chip shop version.
Brown butter hollandaise (or go for bearnaise, peppercorn or bone marrow gravy) provided the moisture; a side of beef dripping chips featured perfect blocks of potato joy, and a pair of beef dripping fried eggs (£3), complete with pan scratchings and frilly edges, were a poetic imagining of how this greasy spoon special should taste.

WestRoom is a laid-back bar on Melville Place in Edinburgh’s West End.
Menus change regularly but typical starters or snack-sized bites might be the Scotch egg with HP sauce, crispy brie with chilli jam or the salt and pepper squid with a citrus mayo.
A seafood section offers a smoky haddock fishcake with poached egg and Hollandaise sauce; mussels with skinny chips and a classic Cullen skink with baker’s bread.
WestRoom is on Melville Place, just off Queensferry Street in the West End of Edinburgh.
The tramline is a two minute walk.

On the site of the oldest inn on the Royal Mile, the White Horse Oyster & Seafood Bar will serve sharing platters of shellfish including lobsters, scallops and crab; monkfish curry; lobster and fries; and whole lemon sole.
There will also be a range of oysters, shucked on the bar in view of customers, and a bar menu comprising small plates like crab fries and sesame tuna.
“Shellfish is often considered a luxury ingredient, and seafood restaurants as formal and expensive” says Fraser.
The White Horse Oyster & Seafood Bar is owned by The Compass Group.
The Group, launched in 2004, also owns the Chop House in Leith, the second Chop House at Wavery Arches, as well as Edinburgh restaurant Monteiths, Sygn bar and The WestRoom gastropub.
