Ghillie Dhu: Overview of Ghillie Dhu

Review analysis
food   staff   ambience

A late-opening bar, restaurant and entertainment venue in the West End of Edinburgh, the Ghillie Dhu lies between Shandwick Place and Rutland Street, opposite the Caledonian Hotel.

Opened in 2010 and marketed as a traditional Scottish pub and live music venue, it is owned and operated by the Glasgow-based G1 group.

Taking its name from a forest sprite, the guardian of the trees in Gaelic folklore, Ghillie Dhu was built as St. Thomas' Church in 1843 for a breakaway congregation from the Scottish Episcopal Church which allied itself with Church of England.

The bar on the lower level is dark, featuring private booths along the south wall.

The venue is associated with music, comedy and drama, together with ceilidhs, Hogmanay celebrations, fashion shows and corporate events.

Located on Rutland Place in Edinburgh’s West End, Ghillie Dhu is set over three floors and although reminiscent of a traditional Scottish pub, it can deliver so much more.

Ghillie Dhu boasts an auditorium for events like their ceilidh nights, a spacious bar with occasional live music and sports on big television screens as well as a welcoming restaurant serving Scottish fare in hearty portions.

An inviting venue that is child-friendly until 8pm, Ghillie Dhu is also accessible to wheelchair users and close to Princes Street.

Main courses often available at Ghillie Dhu include a selection of pies such as steak and Ghillie ale, chicken and ham or mushroom and leek; baked fillet of Scottish salmon; battered fish and chips with mushy peas and also Marshalls’ macaroni and ham bake.

Ghillie Dhu is on Rutland Place in the West End of Edinburgh, and just a stone’s throw from the shoppers’ haven of Princes Street.

drinks

Big on events and ceilidhs, this grand, cavernous city centre bar and restaurant attracts locals and tourists alike.

The 2017/18 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+ ).

As one of capital’s best-known weekly ceilidh spots, Ghillie Dhu has built up a reputation for its bustling ambience and buoyant atmosphere, made all the more appealing by a strong focus on live music and traditional Scottish food and drink.

The menu features Scottish pub staples, from haggis, neeps and tatties to indulgent pies, while the more lavish additions such as braised Orkney beef cheek are not out of place and give a fuller picture of what the restaurant has to offer.

But it’s not just a tourist hotspot; Ghillie Dhu’s relaxed and rustic décor, extensive drinks list, and private booths behind the bar area cater perfectly to after-work drinks or informal catch-ups as well as weekend nights out.
