My Top Restaurants | Eating Edinburgh

People often ask me where I can recommend or which is my favourite restaurant and with the abundance of great places to eat here in Edinburgh, I find it really difficult to pluck just one from the air.

So, with this in mind here I’m going to keep a list of my current top rated places to eat in Edinburgh, (some I’ve blogged, others I haven’t) but essentially these are the restaurants that I rate and have no hesitation in recommending or revisiting time and again.

The staff are uber friendly and helpful, the decor is modern and a great place for a business lunch or a weekend visit.

Not usually a fan of chain/themed restaurants but Cafe Andaluz is a reliable option, I love the almost Moroccan inspired decor, delightful tapas dishes and easy, friendly dining environment.

Chorizo with red wine, spicy ox cheeks and the house red, highly recommended Since opening, a few years ago and the original of David Ramsden’s ‘Dogs’ chain, it’s been a firm favourite for incredibly reasonably priced Scottish seasonal fare, I always make a visit with visiting friends and family.

Once the rain had been suitably brushed off our clothes, we settled at our table in La Piazza, a rather smart Italian on Shandwick Place, which has been serving traditional dishes to a loyal following, for many a year.

After a quick trip to the basement bar of Whigham (which is one of my favourite wine bars in the city), we headed out to find sustenance, and, as always Blythe was well prepared and had already planned to take us to La Piazza, which is firmly settled in the West End of the city, and if you can ignore the mess of tram works, then you will see it winking at you from the end of Shandwick Place.

My bowl of pasta was large and well-filled with seafood, which is what always strikes me first when it comes to these sorts of dishes (and to be honest, I’ve had so many bowls of seafood pasta that I feel that I know what I am looking for in a good dish).

The sauce itself could have used a bit more depth of flavour, perhaps some fresh basil cooked into the sauce and a touch of something fresh, or serve it with an optional slice of lemon that would have really elevated the dish from good to really excellent.

As well as a spacious and comfortable dining area, La Piazza also has a lovely sun terrace which is great for al fresco dining and people-watching.

The a la carte menu is very large and offers both traditional classics, as well as more modern dishes inspired by traditional favorites.

La Piazza has the reputation for producing great well-cooked pasta, a staple which can be a bit of a letdown in some Italian restaurants, and many dishes are available either dairy or gluten-free.
