It’s a fixture for rugby fans en route to Murrayfield, but below the popular Teuchtars bar lies its restaurant A Room in the West End, promising a modern spin on traditional Scottish favourites, writes Nick Mitchell Traditional grub and locally-sourced ingredients are the restaurant industry flavour of the moment, so it’s not difficult to happen upon a vintage-style gastropub in Edinburgh’s city centre.

Book-ending a string of boutiques, cake shops and bars in Edinburgh’s quaint West End village, the restaurant’s adjoining pub, Teuchters, is a prime spot for rugby goers, who regularly spill out onto William Street before heading on to Murrayfield.

Opened in 2001 by highlanders (and ‘teuchters’) Peter Knight and John Tindal, as we are reliably informed in the ‘oor history’ section of their website, A Room in the West End and Teuchters are the older siblings to A Room in the Town, which closed last year, and A Room in Leith and Teuchters’ Landing, which opened in 2008.

At first glance the menu is similarly traditional – cullen skink, haggis, neeps and tatties and pan seared Scottish chicken breast don’t do much to push the boundaries.

My partner chooses the pan seared Scottish chicken breast, smoked ham hock and Lockerbie cheddar tattie cake with pickled red onions and a cider cream sauce.

Friendly, relaxed bar with a neighbourhood feel, equally inviting for a quiet pint or as a place to meet friends.

Teuchters is a locals' pub which invites a loyal crowd and is often also adopted by tourists for their time in Edinburgh, thanks to its friendly, Scottish feel.

It’s also a rugby pub, with fixtures advertised and major matches shown.

You won’t go thirsty—choose from over 80 malt whiskies, including a series of flights, or from 12 draught (mostly Scottish) beers.

You won’t go hungry either – the bar shares a kitchen with the downstairs bistro and produces delicious Cullen skink; stovies; and haggis, neeps and tatties in a mug (easier to eat if you’re drinking); as well as full breakfasts (until 12.30pm), deli platters, pies, burgers and dogs.

It’s that time of year again when rugby takes over and dedicated fans lose over a month of their life to the Six Nations Championship.

Teuchters is likely to be full to bursting on a match day, but there’s no better place to soak up the Six Nations atmosphere than this cosy, old school pub in the West End.

For the Six Nations, though, the bar opens up their beer hall to all rugby fans.

You can’t get much closer to the action without a ticket than holing up in Murrayfield Bar, where rugby fans have congregated for generations.

Much like Teuchters and the majority of pubs closer to Murrayfield, this place will be packed during the Six Nations, but packed with like-minded rugby lovers, at least.
