Italian restaurant packed full of old-school charm, with well-composed traditional cuisine and a friendly vibe.

The 2017/18 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+ ).

A delightful antipasti plate of asparagus and prosciutto, figs and warm honey is a standout starter alongside popular linguine with lobster from a catch of the day-inspired specials board.

Pan-fried veal with anchovies and capers and gorgonzola-topped seared beef pop up on a list of meaty mains, all supported by a cast of well-composed sides and desserts.

An all-day fixed-price menu features rigatoni with smoked pancetta and artichokes, and lobster re-appears inside handmade agnolotti pasta drenched in a creamy bisque sauce.

The winning combination of an unfussy traditional approach and fresh local produce has made Chef Giovanni Cariello many admirers.

There is an a la carte menu featuring stuzzichini (finger foods), antipasti, starters and main course as well as a set menu del giorno with options on two or three courses.

A two minute walk from Haymarket station, La Bruschetta is one of Edinburgh’s more authentic Italian restaurants.

The a la carte is commendably succinct but offers a great choice.

location

With trams swishing along and trains ready to take you to places near or far, Haymarket is an area which is on the move.

It runs from Haymarket Terrace in the North to the Western Approach Road in the South and from Torphichen Street in the East to Orwell Place in the West.

Haymarket Station opened in 1842 as the original terminus of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway, before the line was extended in 1846 through the Haymarket tunnels and Princes Street Gardens to what is now Waverley station.

It’s now the capital’s second railway station.

The station is the epicentre of the Haymarket area and the area around it is looking great after all the refurbishment work connected to the trams, which stop next to the station.

Italian chef and owner Giovanni Cariello has created a perfect slice of Italy in the tastefully decorated La Bruschetta, situated in the busy heart of Haymarket.

With a wealth of experience working in Italy and Scotland, and a large local following, chef Giovanni takes fresh local produce and creates menus that change with the seasons, specialising in fresh fish and seafood which is delivered daily.

When we visited, the daily specials board boasted langoustines, scallops in a delicious sauce served with warm fresh bread, and sea bass cooked in rich lemony butter with sautéed potatoes and rosemary.

The menu del giorno was a delight, offering choices such as fresh mussels with garlic and black pepper, mixed bruschetta paired with beautifully seasoned tomatoes, and filleto di pollo Nostrano: succulent chicken fillets pan-fried in green peppercorn, whisky and cream sauce.

As the only restaurant in Scotland to have been awarded the Eccellenza Italiane, this little haven of Italian fine dining in the middle of Haymarket is sure to delight.
