Edinburgh - REVIEW – McKirdy's Steakhouse, Morrison Street ...

We were warmly welcomed one evening and perused the dinner menu (vegetarian options are available for non-meat eaters dining in a group).

The quality of meat is superb and despite the somewhat uninspirational presentation, I can’t fault the star of the show.

An appointment at the theatre that evening prevented us from having time for dessert, but banoffee pie and sticky toffee pudding are amongst the usual suspects on the sweet menu.

We have also had the burgers from McKirdy’s which are very satisfying, as is the chicken dishes, but it’s the steaks that get my vote every visit.

McKirdy’s is only a short hop from Haymarket station and is perfect at any time of the year, but really popular with pre-rubgy crowds, so be sure to book ahead when there is an event on at meat quality and quite possibly the best steak in Edinburgh, but presentation and atmosphere sometimes brings overall rating down to 4 stars.

Once that big kid inside all of us has rejoiced at the option of curly fries, the next question is simply what cut of steak to pair them with.

Sure, McKirdy’s is small and looks a little out-dated, but nothing quite beats being served by generations of passionate brothers and sons who take care of the meat from butcher's block to plate – the family have been butchers since 1895, after all.

Steaks, in a minimum of 8oz, come in the option of chargrilled or pan-fried and the quality of the 100% Scotch beef burgers shines through in every satisfying bite.

Award-winning haggis and gluten-free sausages top off the meat feast, with a sole vegetarian option reminding customers of the philosophy of doing one thing – meat – and doing it well.

Cha gio (fried spring rolls) for starters are generous in size, wonderfully crispy on the outside with by delicate, fresh flavors inside.

For mains, the thit heo kho (braised pork in caramel sauce) is a winner, a surprisingly light pork dish infused with a tasty sauce and punchy star anise.

Alternatively, the xoi ga (lotus chicken rice) is a simpler, but still satisfying, dish with chicken, shrimp and shitake mushrooms, which add a real depth of flavor amongst the carefully steamed rice.

Be sure to try the Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk and ice as a creamy, refreshing pick-me-up post dinner.

If you’re off caffeine, the Vietnamese dessert is a sweet basil seed drink with lychee and coconut jelly.

Describing itself as “Edinburgh’s first gourmet steak restaurant,” Kyloe only serves the best Scottish beef dry aged for a minimum of 28 days.

Tender cuts of rump, sirloin, ribeye and t-bone – seasoned with their signature steak rub – are served up from locally sourced farms, with most expertly prepared on the bone.

Probably not, and although there are a few non-meat options on the menu, cuts of beef are very much a way of life here, with a range of 21-35 day aged cuts of sirloin, fillet, ribeye or t-bone there to satisfy diners carnivorous cravings.

All 21 day aged steaks come from the Club’s registered butchers and the knowledgeable staff are trained to advise on which cut to go for based on the customer’s individual tastes.

If you are feeling adventurous and are sharing, then we recommend the Butcher’s Block for two – a variety of steak flavours and cuts including their 30 day aged Fillet 8oz, 50 day aged grain fed Ribeye 8oz, 30 day aged Rump 8oz and brisket stuffed marrow bone.

The decor is simple – all the better to concentrate on the rumps, rib-eyes, sirloin, fillets and T-bone steaks which form the backbone of the menu.

The steaks are served with chips, mash or baked potatoes and all the accompanying steak sauces, onion rings and ‘slaws that you can shake a steak knife at.

Burgers, racks of ribs and other meaty delights beef up the menu.
