Vietnam House Restaurant (1–3 Grove Street, Edinburgh) | The List

food

Charming point of embarkation for a journey into Far Eastern flavours.

Tucked into one of its two neat front rooms, diners might imagine they are visiting someone’s home rather than eating in a restaurant.

Spring rolls may be ubiquitous on every takeaway menu but fresh spring rolls are a different beast – a cool, translucent envelope of rice paper encasing a crunchy tangle of vegetables, noodles and herbs.

Wrapping on a different scale comes with the lotus rice – a heavyweight parcel of sticky rice, shredded chicken, shitake mushrooms and shrimps, all contained in a lotus leaf the size of some café tables.

Braised chicken comes in a tangy sauce that judiciously balances sweet and spicy notes.

Bluerapa Thai (6 Torphichen Place, Edinburgh) | The List

Review analysis
food   value

The owners of the family-run Bluerapa Thai in Haymarket do at least have the advantage of ten years’ experience on the city’s scene, having previously owned Chiang Mai on Dalry Road.

These new premises aren’t as well-located, but the food here is of a quality that’s worth seeking out, with a blend of more typical dishes (chicken satay or homemade fishcakes as starters; green curry or Thai style sweet and sour as a main) offset by some distinctive and MSG-free homemade recipes.

Traditional Thai salad dishes of yum, laab and nam tok are served in starter-sized portions but can be augmented to a main with some rice, and include a dish of shredded roast duck served with sliced apple, cashew nuts, coriander and mint in a sharp chilli dressing, or a fresh hot and sour salad of beef with diced cucumber and tomato.

A main of lightly spiced and succulent drunken king scallop is impressively cooked, while the pan-seared duck delicately blends the bite of red curry marinade with a pleasing sweetness.

With sit-in mains from £9.95 per person, rice included in the price and reasonable corkage for BYOB, it’s hard to baulk at the rates, but the quality of ingredients doesn’t always compare to similarly priced establishments.

Rodi Restaurant (121 Morrison Street, Edinburgh) | The List

food

A relative newcomer, Rodi is dominated by the huge charcoal grill which sends out smoky sweet smells as well as highly piled plates into the dining area.

Mains are mostly along the lines of grilled chicken and lamb, often served with a puddle of smoky aubergine which enhances that charcoal flavour.

Bluerapa Thai, Edinburgh - Restaurant Bookings & Offers - 5pm.co.uk

This tiny, welcoming, family-run Thai is on Torphichen Place, close to Haymarket.

It might look unassuming but Bluerapa serves some of the most authentic Thai food in Edinburgh.
