The Sheep Heid Inn was first established in 1360 and it has been serving up food and drink for six centuries now so it's clearly doing something right.

This traditional old pub is full of character and it's the ideal place to visit after climbing Arthur's Seat as it's located near Duddingston Loch.

This is a warm, cozy bar with a fireplace and plenty of delicious and filling options on the menu including Scottish classics like haggis, neeps and tatties, fish and chips, and great pies and casseroles.

The skittles alley is a very good reason to go to The Sheep Heid Inn.

There’s a good variety on the menu and even without the specials I would have founds things I wanted to eat.

The specials menu is what makes The Sheep Heid Inn exciting for food.

The Sheep Heid Inn has had a lick of paint and a new menu and drinks list.

The Sheep Heid Inn is running a competition: suggest a special and be in with a chance to win a free meal.

5 of the best Edinburgh restaurants serving winter warmers ...

The capital’s restaurant scene is one of the best in the UK and in winter time there can be few better ways to warm up than by grabbing a bite to eat and a cup of something warm.

Where to head at the weekend… The perfect way to escape those cold winter weekend days is to take a stroll down to Leith and head for the Lioness.

Though its drink offering and atmosphere is the major draw here, the food in the Sheep Heid Inn is as comforting as it is delicious so pull up a pew near the warm open fire and get ready to order some of their amazing dishes.

For when you want a wee dram to help stave off the cold… Sometimes its not just a warm meal and somewhere cosy we need in this coldest of seasons, sometimes we need a wee dram or two to get us going.

When only a spicy dish will do… In our mind, one of the best new places in the capital and the perfect place to find something hot to keep you warm on a cold day – or morning because the breakfast here are quite simply spectacular.

A 3.7-mile hike from the castle (I Googled it) brought me to the Sheep Heid Inn, a country pub in the village of Duddingston.

The Sheep Heid’s dark-wood interior, with leather armchairs arranged beside the fireplace and heavily laden bookshelves, is as cosy as any well-chilled visitor could wish, and proof that Scottish pubs do nooks and crannies with total conviction, though I never can tell a cranny from a nook.

Established in 1360, The Heid (pronounced “heed”) claims to be the oldest pub in Edinburgh, and possibly the whole of Scotland.

Traditionally, sheep were slaughtered in Duddingston on their way to the Fleshmarket in Edinburgh’s Old Town, leaving their “heeds” behind them.

The locals perfected such delicacies as “singed sheep heid” but, thankfully, the pub’s menu has moved on since those heady days.

Eat and drink like a King at this historic village pub on the outskirts city with lovely views and a ye olde worlde skittle alley This village pub by Duddingston Loch used to be ‘a firm favourite among past monarchs and poets’ according to its website.

Now it’s a firm favourite among climbers of Arthur’s Seat in need of refreshment, students keen on Scotland’s oldest skittle alley and Sunday roast-hunters.

Most punters will leave happy - it’s a busy, smart pub, restored from the original 16th century public house, and now complete with cosy open fires, squashy cushions and a beer garden.

Big selling points include feeling like you’re in a country inn, when you’re still in the city and the stunning views of Holyrood Park and Samson’s Ribs.

The food is gastro-pub rather than pub grub: enjoy BBQ shredded pork sandwiches with roast apple and fries (£7.95), sausage and mash with green beans and fried onions (£8.95), or gnocchi, meatballs, burgers, fishcakes and tarts - all carefully, artistically presented, and accompanied by local cask ales, a bottle of sparkling rosé or something from their long cocktail list.
