The 2017/18 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+ ).

While a main of lightly spiced monkfish with pancetta, lentils and little crab bhajees is beautifully presented, a perfectly pink piece of venison with red cabbage and black pudding bonbon is so pretty it’s tempting to frame it and put it on a wall.

Desserts are a fraction more traditional and include a deeply rich, dark chocolate torte and a sticky toffee pudding that ticks boxes for both quantity and indulgence.

An extensive, sensibly priced wine list is offered and, with 24 options by the glass, it’s worth seeking assistance from the helpful staff for the perfect pairing.

Having been around for such a long time, it’s no surprise that the pub has picked up some spooky stories and a ghost or two along the way.

Scottish Ghost Adventurers spent a night at the bar last year, prompted by the picture above, and manage to record the words “help me” and the name “Connor” being uttered by a mysterious source.

With the most famous story being that of the workmen who were once renovating the infamous pub.

Sections of the pub were once part of the infamous underground vaults of Edinburgh and this has added to the strange aura around the place, especially given the fact that many people met a grisly end in those cavernous rooms.

Another pub that has been built into the side of the South Bridge Vaults and another that seems to have its fair share of ghost stories.

Housed in a former toll collection point, prison and court that originally date back to 1591, the Tolbooth Tavern is a cosy and traditional Scottish pub.

A weekly pub quiz, karaoke nights, real ales, malt whiskies and traditional bar food keep everyone smiling.

From the Tolbooth haggis tower to the Royal Stag venison burger, the menu at the Tolbooth Tavern flies the Saltire with pride.

It is all simple, hearty bar food which is keenly priced and more than capable of sustaining diners through a long day on the tourist trail or an evening spent exploring the malt whisky collection.

Tolbooth Tavern is on the Canongate towards the bottom of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

Tolbooth Tavern Edinburgh itself is part of the original Canongate Tolbooth which was used to collect fees off travellers entering the city centre of Edinburgh.

Nowadays, however, the Tolbooth Tavern is a fantastic bar that serves up hearty pub grub.

There are a few distinctive dishes on the menu that you simply have to try including The Tolbooth Haggis Tower with traditional Scottish haggis (made in-house), then piled high with neeps and tatties (potatoes and turnips, for those not in the know) before being covered in a fiery whisky sauce.

But if that all sounds a bit much for you how about some fresh local haddock in beer batter with chips or some bangers and mash made using Crombies of Edinburgh’s sausages?
