This Saturday, 16 January, is International Hot and Spicy Food Day, meaning your options are to stay home and improvise with the dregs of those bottles of chilli sauce that have accumulated in your kitchen cupboards, or head into town to see what a professional can do with chillies and cayenne.

To help satisfy your urge to push your digestive system to the extreme this weekend, Gareth Davies takes a look at some of Edinburgh’s top establishments catering for that hot and spicy dining experience… Sounding more dangerous than a restaurant probably ought to, The Killer curry house opposite the King’s Theatre has a formal dining room and a buffet restaurant, serving authentic Bangladeshi dishes galore.

Once a year the restaurant hosts its trademark Killer Curry Contest to find the diner with the hottest palate, with proceeds going to local charities.

Not a curry house, per se, but the chicken limb specialists on Old Fishmarket Close in the Old Town throw down a hot and spicy gauntlet for those seeking to prove something to fellow diners.

A north Indian garlic chilli chicken will tick all of your hot and spicy boxes, or try a creamy korma for the more fainthearted diner, with a nan bread big enough to swaddle your offspring.
