Shebeen offers a variety of steaks – rump and sirloin are available in ‘cheetah’ size (up to 480g) and ‘lion’ (over 500g) and then when available, t-bone and rib-eye are also options.

I went for the cheetah sized beef rump and ordered monkey gland sauce on the side.

Served in a bucket on a plate with side salad and a sweet chilli mayo, it looked nice but meant having to lift the big bits of calamari out onto the plate to cut.

The steak was served with a small number of chunky chips (when I say small, I mean 4, but they were huge), mushroom, onion rings and a side salad.

A little costly, particularly the starters (£7.50 for the calamari) but the mains are probably worth it.

If you're hankering for some hefty portions of quality beef, then Shebeen should be your new carnivorous haven.

Sourcing their beef from local farms, the quality here is high, as is the quantity of food coming out on the plates and wooden boards.

The brave are challenged to take on the giant 'lion' steak portion of either rump, sirloin, ribeye or T-bone, served with homemade chunky chips, portobello mushroom, crispy onion rings, and optional tangy monkey gland sauce.

If steak isn't your thing, go for one of the South African specials – the bunny chow (a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with Durban curry) is spicy and generously filled, while the banana and salad on the side soothe and cool.

The restaurant fills up quickly and there's a real buzz in this laid-back room, with its simple wooden tables and the occasional colourful lizard fixed on the wall.

Shebeen is a traditionally styled South African restaurant on Dalry Road.

The wine list and selection of beers also reflect the restaurant’s South African heritage.

Beef sourced from local farms and hung for five weeks is at the heart of the Shebeen menus.

Typical south African dishes such as biltong, Boerewors sausage, potjie stew and bunny chow -hollowed-out loaves filled with Durban curry – are all popular here.

Try to leave space for traditional South African desserts such as the melktert, is on Dalry Road.

Shebeen is famous for flipping only the finest, premium aged steaks over to the grill, and the same rule applies at the Haymarket branch up on Dalry Road, with masses of the meat-eating men and women of Edinburgh flocking to the restaurant’s colourful premises.

There are plenty of hard-to-find but easy-to-drink South African beers and wines on offer (choose a classic, solid red if you’re planning on heading steakwards), and take a look at what the braai (the South African barbecue) can offer up for lunch or dinner or both.

If you’re up for sharing what Shebeen Dalry Road describes as a bucket of meat, go for the fanagalo, a mixed grill platter heaped with traditional South African meatballs (frikadelle), barbecued spare ribs, homemade boerewors sausage, grilled pork belly and grilled skewers of beef or pork sosaties.

Here near Haymarket, a recommended Shebeen favourite for seafood lovers are the wild caught prawns (try saying that in with a Saffa accent!)

But if you really want to go the whole hog, so to speak, do what so many Edinburgh diners have done and opt for a Shebeen steak.

Shebeen is known Edinburgh over for fashioning the finest, premium aged steak-based meal on their traditional South African BBQ grill – the braai, and the same goes for this second (from a total of three) location close to Haymarket along Morrison Street.

There’s another Shebeen on Dalry Road, but here you’re slap bang in the West End between the station and Edinburgh city centre and the sights of the Old Town, making this a busy place for South African beers and wines from one of the great growing regions of the new world and South African barbecue fare for lunch and dinner.

If you’re up for sharing what Shebeen Morrison Street describes as a bucket of meat, go for the fanagalo, a mixed grill platter heaped with traditional South African meatballs (frikadelle), barbecued spare ribs, homemade boerewors sausage, grilled pork belly and grilled skewers of beef or pork sosaties.

But if you really want to go the whole hog, so to speak, do what so many Edinburgh diners have done and opt for a Shebeen steak, perfect as a warm up to a West End show.
