Canny Man's

The Canny Man's has developed a formidable reputation for its Bloody Mary even gaining exposure on BBC's Saturday Kitchen show.

Sadly Watson Kerr passed away in September 2011 but his full page obituary in the Scotsman newspaper described him as an "extraordinary Edinburgh publican whose unique approach to hospitality brought his Canny Man's pub legendary status".

His no nonsense approach to running a public house gave The Canny Man's notoriety that stretched far passed the boundaries of Edinburgh.

This small family run bar in Edinburgh has catered to many dignitaries and celebrities over the years.

With celebrated seafood chef Rick Stein calling the Canny Man's "the best pub in the world".

Established in 1871 by James Kerr the pub has always been the perfect watering hole for Morningside locals.

The original bars still stand in the same place holding all sorts of trinkets and evidence of people who once drank there.

Parts of the original gantry can still be identified and the whole pub is made up of intricate wood work and antiques throughout adding to the charm and intrigue of the well known pub.

An institution since Victorian days (1871) this is a pub that is filled with not only old world charm but a renowned collection of paraphernalia – old clocks, paintings, Chinese umbrellas, musical instruments and mannequins.

With fine wines and hundreds of single malt whiskies to sample, The Canny Mans is one of Scotland most famous pubs and is a must when visiting the area.

Although Morningside might be a bit off the beaten track for those used to the bright lights of the city centre, it really is worth jumping on a bus to check out one of Edinburgh’s best – and most individual – pubs.

A place so welcoming that the first thing you see is a hat and coat stand, the Canny Man’s is one of those pubs that’s old-fashioned yet timeless, a maze of brightly lit nooks decorated with all sorts of endearing knick-knacks that encourages conviviality above all else.

The 2017/18 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+ ).

With a colourful history and formidable reputation, the Canny Man remains a truly unique institution – how many pubs do you know that sell Salmanazars (nine-litre bottles) of champagne?

For some people this is part of its charm; others brave the frosty reception for the vast selection of whiskies, impressive wine list and one of the best Bloody Marys in town.

101 Star Bars (#29): The Canny Man's, Edinburgh | The Independent

Ever since Norman Balon hung up his bar towel after 62 years at the helm of Soho's Coach and Horses, would-be Jeffrey Bernards have been looking for a new "rudest landlord in Britain".

I don't know about landlords, but The Canny Man's is a sure contender for the title of Unfriendliest Pub.

All polished glass and glittering tableware, the bar offers hundreds of whiskys lined up like jewels along its back wall.

This is pub décor and some: alongside the traditional mandolins and dusty jeroboams pinned to the walls are military uniforms, paintings, swords, prams and a boat.

Perhaps the poor girl made the mistake of bringing in her mobile phone.
