New restaurants in Edinburgh for 2016

So if you‘re bored of eating and drinking at the same place and fancy trying something new, check out one of the new cafés, bars and restaurants on our list below: Located just above the traverse theatre, Dine recently opened in November 2015 with an aim to be a relaxed brasserie-style dining and drinking venue.

The Grassmarket now has a new pop up coffee shop located next to Dancebase, offering a selection of coffees originating from Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Rwanda and Kenya.

The coffee shop uses the famous Swedish coffee Koppi coupled with the latest methods of brewing, giving Edinburgh a unique coffee option for the city.

Coffee breaks or 'Fika' in Sweden remains a focal point of Swedish and Scandinavian day-to-day life and something that we are sure Edinburgh residents can get used to!

Look out for Edinburgh themed burgers such as Lothian Wolf and Sunshine on Beef.

Henderson's Salad Table Restaurant Review | Vegan Edinburgh

Review analysis
food   menu

Henderson’s Salad Table, tucked just below ground level on Hanover Street, is a well-known name with everyone in Edinburgh.

Even though it is a vegetarian restaurant – omnivores, vegans and vegetarians alike are all well aware of its reputation.

Henderson’s Salad Table has a completely vegetarian menu, with vegan options clearly labelled.

The menu has been slightly updated since I took the pictures at my last visit, but the dishes below should give you an idea of what to expect: Hendersons Salad Table restaurant is an institution in Edinburgh, so this place is always going to be a solid bet for lunch or dinner.

Yes, the restaurant is vegetarian, but I would say around 75% of the menu is vegan or can be made vegan – so you won’t be stuck for choice.

Restaurant Review of Wee Buddha, New Town, Edinburgh

Review analysis
food

I am very lucky to have a few people on my social media that I would consider foodies and one of their recommendations was Wee Buddha.

Wee Buddha has two areas, one downstairs with only a few tables and the bar and an upstairs where the majority of the tables are.

The menu here at Wee Buddha is a large selection of tapas size small dishes and a few larger noodle bowls.

This way my noodle bowl – traditional king prawn Singapore rice noodles.

The only dish that disappointed a little was the Udon noodles and that was purely because we were both expecting something else.

Although it opened at the end of last year, New Town restaurant New Chapter has remained a relatively well-kept secret – perhaps due to its location just slightly off the beaten track.

As well as providing plenty of pizza and pasta, the Tollcross Rigatoni’s menu puts a greater emphasis on traditional Italian meat and fish dishes, with their new Frittura Mista sea food platter proving extremely popular.

After much anticipation, Edinburgh’s first ever Byron burger branch got up and running on North Bridge at the end of last month with another restaurant planned for Lothian Road.

Located on Jamaica Street where Iglu once was, Wee Buddha is a brand new Asian fusion restaurant and bar in the New Town which opened at the very end of January.

Wee Buddha (2B Jamaica St, Edinburgh) | The List

Relaxed pub with Asian-inspired tapas and a well-curated selection of craft beers and wines by the glass.

Tucked away along a quiet cobbled street, Wee Buddha has character.

Stylish and laid-back, the urban look makes for a comfortable atmosphere to enjoy a favourite tipple – especially with some food, as the full flavours and rich sauces are nicely balanced by refreshing cocktails designed to complement the menu.

If a beer is more your thing try their own light and refreshing Wee Buddha house craft beer, but if you’re sticking to cocktails the Studio 54 combines soft passion fruit flavours with a zesty lime kick.

Tucked away on Jamaica Street, Wee Buddha is a laidback bar and kitchen with innovative Asian dishes, inventive cocktails and a decent beer list.

Guests are just as welcome to drop in for an after work pint and a few chicken wings as they are to settle in for an extended dinner.

The main menu at Wee Buddha is divided between two sections: ‘Wee hings’ and ‘Bowls and chopstick’.

At weekends, the brunch and Sunday roast menu comes into play.

Wee Buddha is on Jamaica Street, just off Howe Street in Edinburgh’s New Town.

drinks

Wee Buddha only does a few things, but they do those things as well as anybody else in Edinburgh.

As a bar it’s about as cool and quirky as you get, rough wooden furniture and stone walls that give it a warming, rustic vibe, then contemporary cocktails (there’s always a new creation on the menu) served as swishly as you’d expect from a fancy hotel bar.

But the food is what really sets it apart from both bars and Asian restaurants in Edinburgh’s New Town.

Offering Asian-style tapas and bar snacks perfectly balancing (in serving size and saltiness) the drinks, as well as several choices for dinner proper, Wee Buddha fully embraces the term ‘fusion’ as a philosophy rather than just a marketing buzzword – need we say more than lentil-based vegetarian haggis wontons?

It doesn’t get much foot traffic on Jamaica Street, but Wee Buddha is definitely worth a wee stroll from Princes and George streets, even a special trip.
