TartanSpoon - REVIEW : Brunch at Element, Edinburgh

The menu is uncomplicated with some fabulous choices from full Scottish Breakfasts to the Vegan Breakfast; from Eggs Benedict with optional added extras to just about anything you want on toast like hummus and halloumi to smashed avocado and chipotle flakes.

The Full Scottish Breakfast includes Crombie’s of Edinburgh Farmer Pork Sausage, Grilled Flat Mushroom, Haggis, Ramsay of Carluke Ayrshire Bacon & Black Pudding, Slow Roast Tomato, Potato Scone, Toast, Free Range Egg (the way you like).

Using some great local Scottish ingredients really gives this breakfast a great big thumbs up in my book.

The sausages are from Crombies Butchers on Broughton Street, the black pudding and bacon is from Ramsays of Carluke, and the bread for the toast is made fresh every day from a local bakery.

Overall, a lovely breakfast that left us very full.

TartanSpoon - REVIEW : Dinner at Element, Rose Street

This visit was to review the Dinner menu at Element.

On the starter menu you’ll find dishes like Ham Hock and Chorizo Terrine or the Carmelised Red Onion and Roast Fig Tart; this was the one dish we were both tempted to try.

These looked more like little potato dumplings as fish cakes are usually well formed disc shapes.

My dining partner went for the Duck Special and I have to admit that I never took a note of what it consisted of.

Anyway, he somehow managed to sell the dish to us plus we had been intrigued since seeing the Duck Nuggets on the starter menu, what they were.

Edinburgh overflows with pubs and bars, but few serve food as good as they do at Element.

This swish new gastro bar sits alongside a sweep of more traditional pubs along the nefarious length of Rose Street.

There are a variety of spaces and seating in an odd melange of old and new décor that comes together to create a relaxed ambience.

Fresh produce is key, with seared Scottish king scallops a highlight, ably backed up by the likes of West Coast mussels laced with chilli, plus they do a decent burger to cater for the pub crowd.

Wines are well chosen, with a decent range of beers and some slick cocktails completing a winning mix that lifts Element ahead of its pubbier neighbours.

Element’s menu is focused on pub grub classics with a refined, modern twist.

I like that they used trout, one of my favourite kinds of fish, rather than salmon to make this dish a little bit different.

Element is a cross between a pub and a restaurant, with a more casual bar area at the front and a cosy dining room at the back.

Element is located on Rose Street which tends to be full of touristy spots and old man pubs, so it feels like a refreshingly different place to eat and drink – still with nice Scottish touches for visitors, but cool enough to be a favourite of locals too.

The classic dishes were a cut above your usual pub grub, and the more inventive dishes wouldn’t have looked out of place on a fine dining menu.

On the look out for new lunch locations, I was invited to try out Element Bar, on Rose Street.

Look at any guide for Edinburgh, and you’ll soon realise that Rose Street is home to lots of pubs and cafes.

With my friend visiting for the weekend, we stopped for lunch at Element Bar in between visiting Edinburgh’s galleries and museums.

Taking a read through their brunch and lunch menu, there were lots of things on offer.

Priced between £6.50 to £10.95 for the mains on the brunch and lunch menu, and £4.75 to £7.50 for the desserts.

ELEMENT RESTAURANT REVIEW: ROSE STREET EDINBURGH

Boys Eat Scotland Element Restaurant Review – Rose Street, Edinburgh We didn’t know what to expect from our visit to Element but we were very pleasantly surprised.

For starter I chose Edinburgh Gin cured trout with pickled cucumber and dill crème fraîche (£6.25) while Raymond chose the twice baked Ayrshire of dunlop cheese soufflé (£5.75) The Edinburgh Gin cured trout was excellent and as you would expect worked really well with the combination of little cucumber pickled cubes and smooth dill crème fraîche.

Edinburgh Gin cured trout Raymond’s cheese soufflé was served on a bed of watercress with apple batons and it was a perfect way to start the meal.

Ayrshire of dunlop cheese soufflé Next I decided to sample the Aberdeen Angus Burger, but it was more the option of adding some haggis to the burger that attracted my attention rather than the burger itself.

Element Restaurant Review: North Sea cod We decided to share dessert and it was the Whisky and Coke sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream that jumped off the menu for both of us (£5.75).

The top 5 dog-friendly pubs in Edinburgh - Scotsman Food and Drink

Its Scottish bistro-style menu offers a range of dishes, bites and platters, but it’s the Sunday Roast that caught our eye – the perfect way to see the Sunday evening in.

Serving home-cooked gastro dishes, with a cracking range of cask ales and whiskies to accompany, this is a great traditional pub, and for that reason hugely popular with locals and visitors alike.

It’s open from 11am – 1am every day, so whether it’s a light lunch, a hearty Sunday Roast, catching the footie or an evening bite, the Queens Arms has it covered for you and your dog.

With an extensive Gin range, new cocktail menu, Prosecco starting at just £15 a bottle and fantastic, fresh, seasonal food, it’s a real breath of fresh air for the West of Edinburgh.

Most importantly however, the bar is now dog friendly and has already become a talking point amongst many of Edinburgh’s Dog Groups, having launched a Dog Menu in association with House of Hound, offering a range of treats, chews and even Dog Pawsecco for your canine friends!
