BrewDog Edinburgh | Craft Beer Bar Edinburgh

BrewDog Edinburgh came into being at the start of 2011, and has since become a glimmering craft beer oasis in the heart of the city's historic Old Town.

Reclaiming and revitalising what once was a lager-soaked karaoke den, the bar transcended its previous guise via the medium of reclaimed furniture, exposed brickwork and plenty of stainless steel.

Although perfectly at home alongside the smattering of grimy rock bars in the Cowgate, BrewDog Edinburgh still manages to set itself apart as a craft beer alternative in a mainstream jungle.

A stop-off at Brewdog’s Edinburgh outpost on the Cowgate is a must – sample the full range of Scotland’s renegade brewers’ inventively named beers (think Dead Pony Club, Cocoa Psycho or Everyday Anarchy), as well as craft brews and exotic imports from other labels like Stone, Mikkeller, To Øl and Beavertown; pick the brains of the passionate and clued-up bar staff and refuel on their much-lauded pizzas.

The Hanging Bat is Edinburgh’s beer Mecca – the bar, which turns three this week, brews its own beer on site; has no fewer than 20 taps and a seemingly endless menu of bottled and draft beers, ales and lagers, including a big selection of Belgium’s best and weird and wonderful brews (green tea beer anyone?)

Other bars renowned among beer fanatics for their selections include The Regent, Campaign for Real Ale-approved (having been twice voted CAMRA pub of the year by the organisation) and Edinburgh’s self-styled premier gay real ale bar; The Bow Bar, which boasts beers from Belgium, Germany, the US, Denmark, Japan, Australia, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Austria and Sweden as well as Scotland and the rest of the UK, and Holyrood 9A, home to 20 pumps and a rotating menu of Scottish beers and ales.

Stewart Brewing runs guided tours of its craft brewery on Thursdays and Fridays from 7-9.30pm – the £15 entry fee includes beers, snacks and unlimited access to the brains of its brewers, who will explain the science behind the beer, and the process of creating new flavours from boardroom to bottle – and because no field trip is complete without a trip top the gift shop, you can even buy draft beer to take home.

Or for the ultimate beer lover’s day trip, book in to play brewer at its Craft Beer Kitchen – prices start from £185 to brew 40 litres of your own beer, choosing from more than 50 recipes, in a two to three-hour guided brewing session, then come back three weeks later (or eight weeks for lager) and bottle the fruits of your labour yourself, adorning the traditional amber glass bottles with your very own bespoke labels – you can even send in your own design beforehand.

Brewdog’s plans include 25 taps of craft beer, food, an outside seating area and an integrated BottleDog to provide the full experience to its customers.

SNP city centre councillor Alasdair Rankin said: “I think there has been an over-provision of pubs for some time in the area.

There was a strong petition online against the move while the council approved an alcohol licence despite its own licensing policy, saying it was of “serious, special concern” because of the number of existing licensed premises in the Tollcross area.

However Gordon Henderson, senior development manager at Scotland Federation of Small Businesses believes competition is good for the pubs in the Tollcross area.

Competition is healthy for pubs and it won’t be new for the already established places in the area.”

The bar rules (No Live Sport, No Football, No shots, No Stella) on entering immediately let you know this is an alternative to Edinburgh's many sports bars.

Brewdog's rapidly expanding empire with bars in most major UK cities, started in Aberdeen.

The Edinburgh bar located on Cowgate was second and opened in 2011.

The bar offers a large range of their own beers and they claim to be the largest independent brewer in Scotland.

The best place in Edinburgh to get educated in the world of Scottish beer.

Mouthy marketing and a chilly, high-ceilinged space can’t get in the way of good beer served well in a welcoming bar environment Despite being the more established of Edinburgh’s two main anti-mainstream beer outlets, BrewDog’s second licensed premises (following their flagship in Aberdeen) has recently lost a bit of steam among capital craft connoisseurs thanks to the arrival of The Hanging Bat.

BrewDog, smirk its detractors, is all mouth and no trousers: their in-your-face marketing and obnoxious, anti-establishment posturing (‘Beer for Punks’ indeed!)

Obviously favouring their own brand, the range of BrewDog beers on offer includes a handful of IPAs, a dangerously dark porter and – whisper it – a lager (unequivocally titled ‘This.

Crucially, the drinks are not foregrounded at the expense of the bar atmosphere – BrewDog Edinburgh is a fully convivial environment, with high-backed booths encouraging intimacy and slumped, battered couches perfect for falling onto.

That’s not to say that the bar is without downsides – prices quickly escalate into double figures in the guest bottle selection, the marketing is indeed less than shameful (branded tees are available behind the bar) and the high ceilings, exposed vents and concrete floors mean the space never really warms up (though the friendly and informative staff will do their best to mitigate that with their welcoming demeanour).
