MUMS Great Comfort Food

MUMS Great Comfort Food

MUMS

MUMS actually began life back in July 2003 as the Monster Mash Café but in July 2010 we said goodbye to our old protégé and became MUMS Great Comfort Food.

At MUMS we believe ‘gourmet’ can and should be for everyone, it doesn’t have to be all ‘poncey’ and value prices should never be an excuse to use inferior ingredients or to serve up microscopic portions, we know you know better and so do we.

We go to great lengths to source some of the best producers this country has to offer.

Yes, ‘gourmet’ should be accessible to everyone, in fact we feel it’s each individuals right to experience great, well made food, at great, non-bankrupting prices and it’s your right to have great service too!

They say, you can’t have your cake and eat it – we disagree, at MUMS you can have it all.

I was advised I couldn’t visit Scotland and not try a steak and ale pie (£7.95).

When it arrived just the sight of it was astounding – the pastry crust is BIG.As the waiter brings the towering pie to the table, I’m giddy like a child excited to break through the crusty exterior. The crust is very airy with the middle separated into layers of soft supple dough with crispy edges.

Since it wasn’t too buttery, the significant amount of crust wasn’t over powering but rather light tasting enough to be enjoyable (I almost finished the whole thing).

Deep inside on the bottom are tender chunks of steak, carrots, onions, mushroom and turnip slow cooked together in a delicious ale-laced gravy. No pot pie will ever be the same for me after this experience.

Comfort food by name and by nature; Mums offers starch, carbs and good, old-fashioned nostalgia.

Kicking hangovers squarely in the unmentionables since 2003, Mums started life as Monster Mash before changing name seven years' ago.

Happily, the basic premise has endured: comfort food like you’d get at your parents’ minus the Spanish inquisition about your love life.

But that only works in Mums' favour: it serves delicious, unpretentious classics quickly and in huge portions, set to the soundtrack of a bygone era.

You can pimp the café’s famous sausage and mash to your own specifications thanks to a variety of banger and potato options (the veggie sausages and black pudding and apple mash are highlights), while shepherd’s pie with lamb shoulder mince proves that Mums’ chefs know their way round the salt and pepper shakers.

This is British comfort food, just like mum would make, and that means bangers and mash, macaroni cheese, fish and chips, and traditional Scottish haggis.

The decor is retro British with a functional feel, like a re-imagined old greasy spoon cafe.

It's always busy with locals and tourists, service is fast, kids are welcome, and the food will really stick to your ribs.

Edinburgh's Best Haggis, Neeps and Tatties Restaurants

If you haven’t guessed it already, we are talking about the famous Scottish dish haggis, neeps and tatties.

Typically served with mashed swede (Scottish: neeps) and mashed potatoes (Scottish: tatties), this representative Scottish dish is available in many places, but we don’t want you to just stumble into any place and to just have any haggis, neeps and tatties.

So we have personally picked a selection of five places in Edinburgh where you can try the renowned haggis, neeps and tatties.

A busy restaurant and bar, Ryan’s serves haggis, neeps and tatties with a delicious onion and rosemary gravy, which will warm you up from the inside.

Extra tip: If you want to dive into the Scottish culture a little deeper, try an Irn-Bru with your haggis, neeps and tatties.
