Adam Smith Design - Brew Lab Artisan Coffee Bar

I was commissioned by a friend to design the brand and brand styling for a coffee shop he was opening in the centre of Edinburgh.

Brew Lab Coffee Bar is focused on artisan roast coffee and technical brewing methods.

A logo and styling that reflected both the culture and quality of produce was the end product.

Their flagship café on Broughton Street is a firm favourite with coffee aficionados but its younger siblings in Brunstfield and Stockbridge are fast growing a following of their own, each with its own distinct style but serving the same great, fresh coffee.

This baby friendly establishment is a unique baby café concept nestled in the heart of Morningside and Bruntsfield, serving great coffee, tea, food, cakes and drinks 7 days a week.

Their beans are ethically sourced, freshly roasted every week and turned into delicious cups of coffee by Burr and Co's passionate team, making it the perfect place to meet up with friends after a busy day shopping in Edinburgh's city centre.

This quiet café, tucked away from Edinburgh’s busy city centre, is filled with delectable pastries and coffee.

A new addition to Edinburgh specialist coffee family is the The Milkman café, which is situated conveniently on Cockburn Street, tucked around the corner minutes from Waverley station.

So when I found Lowdown Coffee on a mammoth shopping day in town I was overjoyed.

We rested our tired feet and indulged in some great coffee and cakes.

This lovely cappucino in Lowdown Coffee was great.

Looking back I should have found out what blend they were using but I think the shopping had gone to my head and I was very appreciative of great coffee.

Overall, Lowdown Coffee is a great wee find on George Street, if you don’t know it’s there you would be forgiven for just walking past.

Six years on thankfully this has changed with the opening of many speciality coffee shops across the city and now one of my favourite places for my caffeine fix, Brew Lab, is pushing the coffee boundaries even further.

Spotting a gap in the market, Dave Law and Tom Hyde, the founders of Brew Lab, are expanding with a new late night speciality offering; that seeks to challenge coffee’s reputation as a ‘daytime-only’ pursuit.

Since opening their venture in 2012, with its trendy ‘distressed’ interiors, Brew Lab baristas have served over 750,000 coffees; drawing on science and art to create the perfectly extracted cup.

There’s also their commitment to ‘single origin’ sourcing, with Brew Lab serving coffee grown on individual coffee farms.

Oh and in case you were wondering and in the spirit of the evening, I decided to relax my one coffee a day policy and can safely report the Nitro Cold Brew Martinis didn’t cause me to experience a sleepless night after all!

While enjoying a cup of java, we met Tom Hyde, co- founder of Brew Lab Coffee, at his shop on South College Street in Edinburgh.

Instead of simply supplying Edinburgh with good quality coffee, Tom decided to go a step further and diversify the business.

For Tom it is always crucial to provide the best possible customer experience to guests and not only provide them with great coffee, but also with great atmosphere and the best WiFi experience.

From day one, Brew Lab Coffee was providing WiFi to its guests - but encountered problems with the login, the number of allowed users and other restrictions.

As one of our first customers, we reached out to Tom and introduced him to BLACKBX Guest WiFi.

We stopped in for a coffee and a chat with Tom Hyde, co-founder of the hugely popular Brew Lab Coffee.

Far from being 'just another coffee shop' supplying a daily caffeine fix to the people of Edinburgh, Brew Lab have gone a lot further in sharing their love of coffee, and can trace their specialty-grade beans from farm to cup.

With a purpose built Training Lab located below the shop, they offer a range of coffee training courses, and cater for everyone from the complete novice to professional baristas looking to hone their skills.

This year, Brew Lab are launching their own brand of bottled, Cold Brew which is brewed for 18 hours in cold water, and as Tom explains “It brings out all the natural sweetness, all the fruity flavour compounds and absolutely no bitterness whatsoever”.

After successfully trialling iZettle pro, the Brew Lab team decided to move their card payments over to iZettle too, which not only allowed them to speed up transaction processing by providing their customers more ways to pay, but it also integrates seamlessly with the iZettle Pro app, Brew Lab are located on South College Street in Edinburgh - www.brewlabcoffee.co.uk
