Hector's | Bars and pubs in Stockbridge, Edinburgh

Review analysis
food

A smart bar with a relaxed feel, offering a good selection of ales, craft beers and wine.

Great roasts make this popular for Sunday lazing Hector’s has been helping well-heeled shoppers put their feet up, and dishing out hair-of-the-dog to locals for almost twenty-five years now.

The curved window seats in the front part of the bar are excellent suntraps, or there are long benches and velvety footstools through the back for sheltering when the rain is on.

Although it’s open every day, for many people, it’s filed in the part of their brain under ‘places to flop about on a Sunday’ - they mix a good Bloody Mary, they have a tall stack of board games, and they do a good roast too.

(A 21-day aged beef, Shropshire chicken or Norfolk pork with crackling, or cashew, walnut and cheddar nut roast for vegetarians.)

Rafael's | Restaurants in Stockbridge, Edinburgh

menu

Set in a snug corner basement room close to the Water of Leith and on the boundary between Stockbridge and the New Town, Rafael’s is a restaurant which is infused with the personality of its owner and head chef Rafael Torrubia.

Which is no problem at all, because in this simple but finely-attired dining space filled with Mediterranean knick-knacks and hidden from the street by a leafy sunken patio, what that means is homeliness and a real passion for the rustic cooking styles of Torrubia’s native Spain, mixed with whichever other influences take his fancy.

This air of personable informality extends to the menu, which is a short list of daily specialities chalked up on a blackboard and presented to the customer at the table.

It means there isn’t an extensive choice, but rather a sense of variety and novelty for regular visitors, while Torrubia still builds in a decent choice amidst the limited options.

Doing things in this manner means it’s hard to elaborate with certainty on what diners might be able to expect, but the sample menu on Rafael’s website gives some indication - it lists such diverse a la carte choices as starters of pan-fried morcilla on green lentils or blue cheese and walnut soufflé with mains including fried pork tenderloin in a calvados sauce and grilled ostrich steak and colcannon in a red wine sauce.

food

Everything i have tried has been very nice.

My dining in experience was very pleasant, although there are 2 parts to the restaurant, we were seated at the top part which i found to be a little small, we were a bit too close to other customers, it seemed like they were trying to fit as many in as they could.

I had Chicken curry, which i really enjoyed although my one complaint would be that the curry sauce was a little runny.

Now on to the delivery service, the food was good as always the prices i thought a little expensive compared to other chinese takeaways but worth paying because of the quality, and it always arrives hot and fairly quickly.

Great little chinese restaurant.
