Nok's Kitchen Restaurant, Reviews & Book - Hidden Edinburgh

It seems that Edinburgh has been experiencing a Thai culinary revolution in recent years with numerous restaurants popping up all over the city.

These establishments quickly helped earn Edinburgh a reputation for serving some of the most delicious Thai cuisine.

With such competition it can be hard to set them apart, however Nok’s Kitchen located in the affluent suburb of Stockbridge really sets the bar for its Thai counterparts.

Here’s a sneak peak off their menu: Gaeng Phet Ped Yang – A red curry of grilled duck breast with cherry tomatoes, pineapple, grapes, strawberry imported baby eggplant and Thai sweet basil.

Pocket-sized restaurant in Stockbridge, with a reputation as one of the best places for Thai in Edinburgh.

Nok’s Kitchen is a cute little Thai restaurant down a cobbled lane, just off the main drag in Stockbridge.

They're not reinventing the wheel here – there are the usual offerings of salads and soups, appetisers, dishes from the wok, and rice and noodle options, plus a range of curry specialities with vegetables, shin beef, chicken or prawn.

Their pad Thai with vegetable and tofu (chicken or prawn available too) is fresh and delicate, served with their special tamarind sauce.

They describe their cooking as containing a 'cloud of fresh herbs' and there's certainly plenty of holy basil packing a punch in many dishes.

Presented underneath a wicker bird cage cloche were two rose-shaped dumplings, each the pastel pink-and-purple colour of a My Little Pony, with a blob of sesame seed scattered coconut cream in the stamen.

The doughy casing of these dumplings was on the cusp of sickly sweet, but was tempered by a nutty salty centre of macerated prawn, chicken, peanut and shallots.

Our other starter, the karee puff (£4.95), featured three buttery russet-brown pasties, each stuffed with a curried sweet potato chilli-spiked mush, and there was a little bowl of clear cucumbery syrup on the side to lighten the richness.

Apart from the fatty duck skin, which we peeled away from the meat like a spent leech, this dish was good – sweet with coconut milk and a little spice, with bits of pineapple, holy basil and halved red grapes in the mix.

Compared to other Edinburgh Thai restaurants like the upmarket Passorn and trendy Ting Thai Caravan, the food served in this place is much homelier.

Nok's Kitchen is a family run business offering homely and delicious food rather than the style conscious offerings of many other Thai restaurants.

One exception to this, however, is their signature dish which is served with some flair.

The food was lovely and was very well presented and the staff were very helpful despite the restaurant being extremely busy on a Thursday evening.

Noks Kitchen is one of the most delightful dining experiences you could wish for in Edinburgh, if you enjoy Thai food.

This family run restaurant has authentic Thia food prepared I believe, by the grandparents of the charming young staff that work front of house.

Max Cruickshank Love this little restaurant, delicious food and wonderfully helpful staff.

Only thing I would say is that as I booked it online I didn't know they needed the table back 1 hour 45 mins after we arrived, it would have been helpful if we had known this beforehand, or even at the start of the meal rather than the the staff trying to hurry us up when that time was approaching (but in a very polite way as always), we would have been happy to go when we needed to if we had known about it!
