Straight away we were surprised at the prices; having read many a glowing Purslane review, £30 for a 3 course meal seemed excellent value.

However my fellow diner felt that the peaches were too sweet as an accompaniment to the scallops and the dish had too many soft textures.

This was a smooth Strawberry and creamy Vanilla Panna Cotta with a sharp strawberry sorbet, chantilly cream, chewy meringue and a sweet strawberry coulis.

The torte base was thin and crispy while the sweet, juicy cherries made a great companion for the bitter smooth chocolate.

In my opinion the food at Purslane is of Michelin star quality.

Purslane in St Stephen’s Street – no relation to its namesake in Cheltenham – is foremost amongst restaurants offering fine dining menus.

With an impressive CV, including experience in the kitchens of Marco Pierre White, Jeff Bland, Phil Thompson and Jean Michel Gauffre, Paul’s cuisine blends classical skills with more contemporary influences.

Well-seasoned crushed potatoes and steamed kale added contrasting earthy notes, whilst the whole dish was bought together by a rich mussel and saffron veloute.

An optional cheese course – a snip at a mere £5 supplement – comprised five varieties of British and French cheeses, soft and hard, mild and strong, the best being Fourme d’Ambert and Epoisses A beautifully presented pre dessert, the size of a full dessert, saw a delicate vanilla pannacotta layered with rhubarb jelly and served with a quenelle of ice cream.

Fine Dining Guide will return to Purslane to sample other dishes from the carte and will monitor its progress with interest.

A compact and stylish restaurant in fashionable Stockbridge, Purslane has garnered lots of praise for its modern, seasonal cooking.

Chef Gunning has an impressive CV taking in several restaurants with multiple Michelin stars and he brings that high level expertise, minus the Michelin-style fuss, to Purslane.

Locally sourced, seasonal ingredients drive the menus at Purslane.

As well as the a la carte menu, there is a tasting menu which can be paired with matched wines for each course.

Purslane is on St Stephen Street in Edinburgh’s Stockbridge.

Purslane, my arboreally inclined friends tell me, is a pretty but otherwise unimpressive little plant that is sometimes known as pink purslane and which, like the majestic Redwood, originates in north America.

Six months ago, Gunning moved into the basement space formerly occupied by Redwood, but instead of offering a notably different proposition – as Redwood did – his menu looks at first sight like one that would not be out of place across the road at the Stockbridge Restaurant.

Although Gunning’s offering was clearly a good deal more high falutin’ than many of his immediate neighbours, he was nevertheless planning to operate in an affluent little enclave of the capital that is stuffed full of decent restaurants – from Bell’s Diner to Room in the New Town – ploughing the same furrow of contemporary Scottish cuisine, not to mention the superior pub grub served by Iglu or the seafood option provided by Café Fish.

Instead, Vicky opted for the prawn and leek remoulade with crab bonbons and tomato dressing while I chose the cauliflower velouté with walnuts and blue cheese.
