We are based just a few minutes’ walk from Princes Street in the heart of Edinburgh’s West End.

Situated at one of Edinburgh’s main transport hubs, we’re not tricky to find.

There’s on-street parking (metered during the day) and major bus and tram routes nearby on Shandwick Place & Princes Street.

The Social Bitches dine with actors Rob Ward & Ryan Clayton at Otro, one of Edinburgh’s best Restaurants.

The men to thank are Rob Ward and Ryan Clayton, two brilliant actors who not only play the leads, but all of the supporting roles as well.

Rob: When I was casting Gypsy Queen, a friend suggested Ryan, and I was like ‘that little bastard, yeah right!

Social Bitches: Rob, we know your job description reads “actor”, BUT how is playing a gay man, especially given the sexual aspects of the play?

Though in this instance, we’re giving the final word to the cast of Gypsy Queen, the very talented Mr Rob Ward and Mr Ryan Clayton.

So when an egg that looked fit for Tam Shepherd’s window stared up at me from my "confit duck hash cake" at the newly opened Otro in Edinburgh, it took me a trip down memory lane.

On enquiry I learn that the sea bass is farmed, so I opt for coley given the same treatment, "with salsa verde on a warm chickpea, chorizo, and wild garlic salad".

The chickpeas are soft in a manner reminiscent of the tinned sort, no heinous crime there, but the chorizo, in its spongy brightness, doesn’t sing out top quality either, and we have to assume that the salsa verde must be the green squirt that rings the vinegary orange liquid below.

Desserts – a warm mandarin cake with chocolate ice cream and orange custard, and a praline brownie – are sweet enough to send a sharp spike of insulin surging into the bloodstream, so anyone with a sugar habit will probably like them.

The brownie would provoke a sugar rush in its own right; the crunchy sugar honeycomb, praline mousse, brandy snap cracker and vanilla ice cream that flank it collectively constitute a prescription for hyperglycemia.

Bustling West End bistro where the welcome is warm and the food just dreamy.

All hail Otro, an airy bistro that’s bringing a sense of home to that slightly awkward area between Haymarket and the West End proper.

From the team behind New Chapter, there’s the same focus on getting things right for big groups and parties with lots of different menu and room options.

This is clearly food from people who like to look after people – warm-hearted, generous and fairly priced, there's a serious risk you'll relax so much you'll miss your train.

Thing is, you won’t actually care.

However, what she lacks in olfactory ability, she makes up for in enthusiasm, especially since we both loved this restaurant’s other venue, New Chapter, back when it opened at the beginning of last year.

The menu is similar to the one at their smaller Eyre Place restaurant, and I had a sense of déjà vu after ordering the white onion and cider soup (£5.50).

Our other starter – smoked mackerel rillettes (£6.50) – was a subtle and whispery dish in green and white, thanks to three creamy spheres of fishy paste sandwiched by veil-transparent discs of radish, and flanked by cucumber kernels, horseradish cream with a very subtle spike, crumbled hazelnut and a pond green flourish of herby jus.

This puck of meat was dense and peppery, with a creamy fried duck egg on the top and, on the side, a dish of pickled red cabbage, caramelised walnuts and raisins.

While this was relatively homely, they went all fine dining with the Yorkshire rhubarb cheesecake (£5.95), a dainty wedge of layered cake, with a vanilla flecked mantle of pink jelly on top.

New Chapter Restaurant: Home

New Chapter has two downstairs private dining spaces, perfect for a variety of events or functions.

Whether it’s a family get-together, corporate lunch, pre-wedding celebrations or even a hen-night, our private rooms are away from the bustle of the main restaurant.

Our private rooms can be reserved separately or together for any special occasion of 10-46 guests.

We understand the importance of flexibility and can tailor menus to your needs or budget to ensure your event is just as you imagine it.

We have specialist event co- ordinators who will be in touch with you once you make an enquiry – they will help you every step of the way.
