The food at Harry's Bar & Grill is enjoyable enough but it looks better on the menu than it does on the plate, finds Gaby Soutar In my head I have the food equivalent of taxi drivers’ The Knowledge.

Our other starter – Tamworth pork belly, white onion purée, charred radicchio, jus (£8) – was also a bit of a fail.

It came with a couple of blobs of lumpy white purée, a swirl of balsamic syrup and no radicchio.

When it came to my main of pot-roast burnt spring chicken (£14), I wish someone had told me it needed a side.

Anyway, this place is certainly not the worst restaurant in the area, but the food reads a lot better than it eats.

In the past, Harry’s Bar was a hip 80s Edinburgh hangout; these days it’s a social enterprise establishment promising ethical, sustainable and organic produce wherever possible.

With a jumping weekend dance floor, Saturday afternoon jazz, a cosmopolitan menu of smokehouse small plates and a wide variety of craft beers and cocktails, Harry’s is reclaiming its place at the heart of West End nightlife.

Harry’s Bar’s food menu offers a diverse range of smokehouse dishes and small plates ranging from comfort food classics to hearty salads.

Harry’s Bar is located on Randolph Place in the West End, around 15 minutes on foot from the Usher Hall, Traverse, Lyceum and Filmhouse on Lothian Road.

On street parking can be difficult in the West End, but there is paid parking at the NCP car park on Castle Terrace, about ten minutes walk away.

Having launched in Newington in the mid-Eighties, Chinatown moved to its new home on Atholl Place in 2008 and it has fared very well ever since.

Many would rate Chinatown as one of Edinburgh’s best Chinese restaurants and it gets glowing mentions from several local restaurant guides.

Established in 1986, Harry’s Bar has continuously evolved and rebranded to move with the times while remaining a staple of the Edinburgh foody scene.

Not only serving great food, Harry’s Bar is committed to giving back to the community.

A social enterprise bar, Harry’s focuses on getting young people into sustainable work by providing them with the skills and experience to pursue a career in the hospitality business.

Great food with a great heart – it’s no surprise Harry’s was named Best New Initiative at the BII Awards 2017.

Pick away on a variety of tapas dishes like a mini burger with smoked ketchup and bacon crumb; chilli and garlic prawns; haggis and cheddar spring rolls with mustard mayonnaise; or Harry’s meatballs with marinara sauce.
